The Outer Worlds 2 is set to bring forth a new chapter in Obsidian Entertainment's sci-fi space-faring adventure. The first entry was a strong start, but The Outer Worlds 2 has the chance to elevate its predecessor's strongest aspects while also improving the other gameplay elements that have even more potential.
Obsidian is going full speed ahead in 2025, as the developer has already released one game this year. Avowed was one of the first big releases of 2025, and this fantasy adventure had plenty of great qualities, like its rewarding exploration. The Outer Worlds 2 is likely bound to share some of these features, too. However, when it comes to its RPG label, The Outer Worlds will hopefully bring more to the table than Avowed.
The Outer Worlds 2: The Argument For and Against a Level Cap
In hindsight of how controversial it was in the original game, The Outer Worlds 2 may want to completely avoid having a level cap.
Avowed Took a Streamlined RPG Approach, and The Outer Worlds 2 May Be Better Off Doing the Opposite
Avowed Offered a Great Adventure That Focused Less On Gameplay Depth
Granted, Avowed being more laid back in its approach to RPG mechanics isn't exactly a bad thing. Sometimes it's refreshing to just be able to jump into an adventure without having to worry about complex systems. Not every RPG has to be like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 or Baldur's Gate 3. However, The Outer Worlds 2 taking the same approach would risk feeling repetitive. When the first chapter of Obsidian's sci-fi adventure launched, it steered a little closer to the lighter side of RPG gameplay, and the sequel now has the opportunity to change that.
Within its first month, Avowed managed to reach an impressive 5.9 million players. Although it's hard to confirm, this success could potentially have Xbox Game Pass to thank for a portion of these numbers.
The Outer Worlds 2 Needs to Stand Apart From Avowed
Just because The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed both come from the same studio doesn't mean they have to play exactly the same when it comes to their RPG approach. Going different routes with the two franchises demonstrates flexibility and creative thinking from Obsidian, which can help draw in more players. There are expectations that The Outer Worlds 2 will one-up its predecessor, and being more complex with its RPG features would likely excite a lot of fans.
The Outer Worlds set high standards for its sequel to meet, and that can ignite both excitement and worry. For those hoping for a more in-depth experience, The Outer Worlds 2 will want to forego the Avowed route. Of course, The Outer Worlds 2 doesn't have to be on par with the aforementioned Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but a little bit more complexity could be really thrilling to dive into.
