The Outer Worlds 2 is counting down to its launch, which is now known to be on October 29 later this year. The second entry in Obsidian Entertainment's satirical FPS RPG series, The Outer Worlds 2 is set to take fans once again to a corporate greed-fueled farcical future setting, this time on a colony called Arcadia that is under siege from forces both very real in the form of the newly-minted Auntie's Choice company, and others that are more otherworldly.

The Outer Worlds 2's latest trailer and Deep Dive earlier this June shed a lot of light on some of the biggest questions about what it will entail and what players can expect this time around. Obsidian developers focused heavily on the expanded world building and evolution of the situation following the events of the first game, along with the various roleplaying opportunities these will provide. Details like skills, perks, flaws, and the range of playstyles they will accommodate were also highlighted. And although Obsidian did dedicate a portion of the show to mentioning the potential companions that will be able to join players on their adventure, they were only briefly touched on compared to other elements. Given this, then, there's still likely a lot more to see regarding them.

Everything Revealed About The Outer Worlds 2's Companions, So Far

During Summer Game Fest 2025, the Xbox Games Showcase devoted time to developers from Obsidian to show off more of The Outer Worlds 2. Among the items mentioned above, it was confirmed that, like the original title, there will be six companions in the sequel. They will each be connected to some of The Outer Worlds 2's factions while having their own personal associated quest lines pertaining to their history and occupations:

  • Niles: Sharing the protagonist's position as an Earth Directorate agent, Niles is struggling with upholding the organization's ideals or deciding to go rogue, with players being able to sway his choice.
  • Valerie: Accompanying Niles is his support drone, Valerie (Val). Appearing to function similarly to SAM in TOW1, Val's robotic nature and functions are said to hide deeper connections to Niles and the greater goings-on as well.
  • Marisol: An older member of the Order of the Senate described as a talented mathematician and assassin rolled into one. Marisol's true mission and motivations may currently be unclear, but she looks to potentially enlist the Agent's assistance with some "unfinished business."
  • Aza: Part of a local cult that worships the weird dimensional rifts wreaking havoc across Arcadia, and just celebrates violence in general, fans will be able to let Aza indulge in her chaotic bloodlust or attempt to reform her.
  • Inez: A combat medic who survived the villainous Auntie Cleo's experimental attempts to graft exotic animal parts onto her soldiers, Inez seeks help with her condition and possibly revenge on those who created it.
  • Tristan: A Protectorate Arbiter serving as judge, jury, and executioner in the Arcadia system. Fans can either aid Tristan "or show him what true justice looks like."

The Next Outer Worlds 2 Showcase Should Pull the Curtain Back on its Companions

While Obsidian thus offered some general information and teases about The Outer Worlds 2's companions, it really has barely scratched the surface for now. The studio is recognized for crafting well-realized and interesting, if not relatable, companion characters, and TOW2's collection already looks compelling. With it having delved deeply into many of the narrative and mechanical aspects that are being overhauled and improved in the sequel, this other important component of Obsidian's core design should take the spotlight next.

Some fans may be disappointed to learn it's also been confirmed that, like the original, The Outer Worlds 2 won't feature romance.

There's likely to be at least one more Deep Dive between now and The Outer Worlds 2's release. It would appear then that the next logical step would be to give fans a closer look at the upcoming title's companions. Obsidian would do well to give players a bit more insight into the morally gray situations and dynamics that companions will present to them in the latest installment.
