Development of The Outer Worlds 2 is progressing smoothly, according to Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart. The second installment in the space RPG series, The Outer Worlds 2 is in great shape according to Urquhart, and looks to continue the streak of successful games from the developer in recent years.
Released in 2019, The Outer Worlds was a dark comedy about the dangers of unrestricted capitalism, drawing inspiration from sci-fi television series like Futurama and Firefly, as well as the Fallout video game series, which Urquhart helped to develop. The Outer Worlds 2 was announced in June 2021 during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase at that year's E3 event. Though the game was still in a very early stage of development at the time, the trailer was a massive hit, with its tongue-in-cheek meta-humor and a dramatic-sounding narrator describing things onscreen like "pointless slow-motion running" that "should bolster pre-sale numbers."
While not much has been revealed about the actual content of the upcoming game, Urquhart seems happy with its standing in development. In an interview posted to Limit Break Network's YouTube channel on August 13, he noted that several members of the development team from the first game have returned to work on the sequel, including game director Brandon Adler and creative director Leonard Boyarsky. Having several key members of the team returning bodes well for the project, he noted, as he considers the studio lucky to still have leadership that understands the particular brand of humor in The Outer Worlds.
Development On The Outer Worlds 2 Is Progressing Smoothly
Obsidian Entertainment has seen success with both games it has launched since the release of the original The Outer Worlds, with both the Honey I Shrunk the Kids-like survival game Grounded and 2D 16th-century Bavarian murder mystery Pentiment seeing favorable reviews from both fans and critics alike. However, Urquhart noted Obsidian's games have not all stuck to their original timetables for release due to the pandemic, going as far as to say that they were "a crappy developer for about a year and a half." Moving forward, though, he is happy with the simultaneous development of The Outer Worlds 2 and upcoming Pillars of Eternity offshoot Avowed, which is currently scheduled for release on February 18, 2025.
At one point in development, Urquhart said there had been a discussion about pulling the team off of The Outer Worlds 2 to focus strictly on Avowed, but the developers stood firm on pushing both games forward. Despite rumors of another new Obsidian RPG in development as far back as 2022, Urquhart still hasn't made any comments, but it sounds as though both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 will provide the same level of quality that fans of the developer have come to expect.
