Since fully launching in March, Red Barrels has continued to release a steady stream of updates for its popular first-person survival game that have implemented bug fixes, added cosmetics, and provided players with plenty of unique activities. The Season 1 update in July, for example, notably introduced a new map and boss to The Outlast Trials, while September saw the rollout of a time-limited event, challenges, and balancing tweaks, among other things. Thanks to information provided by the development team, fans now know what kind of content will be added in future updates for The Outlast Trials.

According to a recently released Q4 2024 roadmap for The Outlast Trials that was shared by Red Barrels, gamers can expect to see a new level, event, and MK-Challenge when the co-op title's second season goes live. This season will feature an additional rig, enemy NPC, and storylines as well. Notably, Rigs in The Outlast Trials allow players to use special moves, such as the ability to stun enemies or deploy smokescreens. Before the next The Outlast Trials season begins, Red Barrels plans to release a new event titled Geister that will be accompanied by new and returning items, a lobby mini-game, and an MK-Challenge.

Red Barrels unveiled its latest roadmap just weeks after The Outlast Trials developer confirmed that it had been hacked. The cyberattack, which resulted in some data being accessed, significantly impacted the production timeline for Red Barrels, the studio shared with the community. Red Barrels hopes to be able to follow its roadmap for The Outlast Trials, but the developer said that it would have to delay some things as a result of the recent breach.
In a July interview, The Outlast Trials game director Alex Charbonneau disclosed more information regarding the title's development. One thing he noted was that, unlike other live service games, The Outlast Trials will have an actual ending. Charbonneau also revealed that his studio's ongoing project was originally only supposed to have about four or five trials.
By April, The Outlast Trials had already managed to attract two million players across PC and console, according to the developer. It reached close to 37,000 peak concurrent players on Steam alone around the time it entered Early Access on the Valve-owned platform in May 2023, according to data provided by analytics tracker SteamDB.
