Since The Penguin finished up in November 2024, DC fans have been crying out for a continuation into the story of Oz Cobb with Season 2 and now, a Warner Bros. Executive has offered an update by disclosing what it would take for the critically acclaimed show to return. HBO's The Penguin took viewers through a whirlwind journey of deceit, heartbreak, and crime as Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti took to the hopeless streets of a reimagined Gotham City. While many fans wondered how the project could ever follow in the same footsteps as the Caped Crusader, the show went on to become one of the most successful TV shows for the streamer.
The Penguin opened to 5.3 million US viewers across all platforms since its debut in the first four days, firmly marking its territory as one of the best shows of 2024. Episode 4 of the series is the highest ranked of the series on IMDb, with an incredible score of 9.5 from 12,000 reviews. Starring in movies that include The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges, and Phone Booth, Colin Farrell's portrayal of Oz Cobb was met with critical acclaim due to how well he pulled off the Gotham Kingpin of the underworld, not to mention how incredible his prosthetics were that transformed him into the devious mobster. Arguably, one of The Penguin's best villains came in the form of Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, whose amazing performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series at the Critics Choice Awards.

In an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey revealed an update on The Penguin season 2, stating that the show was never meant to extend past a single season and another season wasn't currently in the works. However, in light of Season One's massive success, Dungey said that " everyone is interested" in coming back "and doing more", so The Penguin season 2 isn't off the table and is "definitely a possibility" if Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti wanted to slip back into their roles again as he couldn't envision it continuing without them.
" The Penguin is one of those things where — and it’s interesting, because when you talk with everyone involved, everyone is interested in possibly revisiting those characters and doing more — it was very much designed as a limited series. But I would never say never. I think if we can get the creative stars to line up in the right way, and the talent is available — because we certainly wouldn’t want to do this without Colin [Farrell] and Cristin [Milioti] and that team — I would say it’s definitely a possibility, but there’s nothing in the works at the moment."
At the start of the year, Matt Reeves gave an update on the possibility of The Penguin returning for a second season, stating in an interview that he was "Obviously, doing The Batman 2, and we want to get the timing right on that. Our plan and our hope is to absolutely do another season. We just have to come up with the idea that we think is the right idea, which is what we're working on."
Reeves' comment seems to indicate that The Batman 2 is his current main focus and if a second season of The Penguin is going to happen, it wouldn't be until the movie is completed. With so many delays to Robert Pattinson's iconic role, who is to say when that could be, but one thing is for sure, fans need to see what happens next after Sophia opened that intriguing letter from Selina Kyle while in prison.
The Batman Part 2 is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
