The Sandman proved a hit on Netflix when its first season was released in 2022. The dark fantasy series is now gearing up for a second season in 2025, and one fan-favorite character has finally been officially confirmed for a return.

The Sandman is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s pivotal DC graphic novel series. The story revolves around the dysfunctional members of the Endless, a family made up of cosmic entities such as Desire, Death, and Despair. The main plot follows Dream (Tom Sturridge) who humans have captured for over 100 years. After escaping, Dream must retrieve his possessions and rebuild his kingdom, which has fallen into disarray. Like the comics it was based on, Season 1 of Netflix's The Sandman was almost anthology-like, with each episode focusing on the different weird and wonderful characters and creatures Dream came across in his quest. One such character is Johanna Constantine, a relative of DC's John Constantine, a relative of DC's John Constantine played by Jenna Coleman.

Jenna Coleman Teases The Sandman Return

Coleman was only in three episodes in The Sandman Season 1, and it was questionable whether she would return for Season 2. Photos taken of Coleman on the set of The Sandman Season 2 seemed to suggest she would be returning, but it’s since been officially confirmed by Coleman herself in an interview with Screen Rant that Johanna will be involved in the new episodes. “Well, I was seen on set actually, so yeah, I definitely am… I'm back in Season 2,” she said. Coleman also teased that Season 2 of The Sandman is more “visually stunning” and “cinematic” than the first, with the scale ramping up to meet the needs of the unique show.

“Yeah. Yeah, I think I'm allowed to say that. I'm pretty sure I am. Well, I was seen on set actually, so yeah, I definitely am. Yeah. Yeah, I'm back in Season 2. I'd say [season two] is probably more visually stunning than it was the first year. I mean, I've done bits of ADR. What can I say without Allan Heinberg shouting at me? The scale is, I mean, it's so cinematic and so I think it's a very unique show. So yeah, everything that you loved in Season 1 is there and more for sure.”

In Season 1, Coleman appeared as both Johanna Constantine, the occult detective, and her identical ancestor, Lady Johanna. Dream comes to her to retrieve his magical pouch of sand and, in exchange helps rid Johanna of her recurring nightmare. It's unclear yet whether Coleman will return as the modern-day Johanna, or Lady Johanna in Season 2, or both. Season 2 of The Sandman is expected to continue following the story set out in the graphic novels. Casting news has revealed that characters like Odin, Loki, and Thor are set to make their debut, indicating Season 2 will introduce the banquet story line in which Dream gathers all the various deities together.

The Sandman Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.5.
