On September 29, Disney and 20th Century confirmed that The Simpsons Movie 2 is in development, and is tentatively scheduled for a theatrical release on July 23, 2027. The release timing of The Simpsons Movie sequel may be intentional, as it would align with the 20th anniversary of the first film, and be slotted in between two Marvel Cinematic Universe entries.

Originally released in July 2007, The Simpsons Movie saw Homer Simpson face the consequences of his own actions. The film's plot centered around an incident involving Homer and a pig named Plopper, as they inadvertently contaminated Lake Springfield to such a degree that Springfield itself was placed under a giant glass dome for months. The Simpsons Movie was one of the top box office hits of 2007, grossing over $536 million on a budget of $75 million, and was praised by critics for its animation, writing, and humor. It was subsequently nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2008.

The Simpsons Are Coming Back To Theaters In 2027

20 years after The Simpsons made its silver screen debut, Disney and 20th Century announced that the long-standing TV series will get another film. As reported by Variety, The Simpsons Movie 2 is currently in development and scheduled to release in theaters on July 23, 2027. The theatrical release date will line up with the 20th anniversary of the first Simpsons film. However, Disney did not offer any plot details about The Simpsons Movie 2. The news came months after Simpsons series creator Matt Groening stated that he was open to making a sequel film. Groening also said that The Simpsons Movie was a challenging endeavor, as it was being worked on simultaneously with the ongoing TV series. The Simpsons began its 37th season on the air on September 28.

Along with the logistical challenges that come with making a film, The Simpsons Movie 2 will have a few notable absences from the cast list. In November 2024, longtime Simpsons voice actor Pamela Hayden retired after 35 years of working with the show. Hayden voiced characters like Milhouse Van Houten, Rod Flanders, and other additional characters across her tenure. Since 2025, the role of Milhouse has been played by Kelly Macleoud.

Given the fact that The Simpsons has lost some voice actors between each film, The Simpsons Movie 2 could be the best way to send the series off on a high note. It remains to be seen which direction The Simpsons will go before the film's launch.
