In November and December 2025, it will finally be time to say goodbye to Netflix's Stranger Things, and I know exactly what TV show fans can watch in the meantime. When Stranger Things season 4 concluded, viewers anticipated a huge battle between good and evil, and that's definitely going to be the focal point of the final season. Since season 1 premiered in July 2016, it's been almost ten years since this epic story began, and hopefully, big questions about the Upside Down will get answered.
Although of course Stranger Things is one of the most popular sci-fi series, especially when it comes to stories focused on strong and smart teenage characters, another show might be even more intriguing. I recommend it every chance I get and am still thinking about the singular premise and eerie tone.
The Duffer Brothers' Stranger Things Spinoff Should Feature These Cameos (Or It Might Not Be Good)
The Duffer Brothers are working on a highly anticipated Stranger Things spinoff and these familiar faces would make it even better.
I Think Stranger Things Fans Should Watch The Society, Which Has An 86% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Stranger Things fans would enjoy The Society, a teen mystery series that has one season on Netflix. The series premiered on the streaming service in March 2019 and, unfortunately, only had 10 episodes. However, these 10 episodes make for a quick, fun, and intense binge-watching experience.
The Society has a high Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%, which is only a little lower than Stranger Things, which has a 92% rating. The story dives into the gripping and eerie journey of teenagers in West Ham, Connecticut, who realize one day that all the adults in their small town are missing. The show has it all: leaders, followers, family, friendships, shocking moments, and plenty of emotion. Kathryn Newton, who starred in Christopher Landon's body swap slasher comedy Freaky, played Allie Pressman, my favorite character on The Society. She has a complicated bond with her older sister Cassandra (Rachel Keller), and she finds her confidence as she navigates an unsettling new world.
If fans are looking for a show to fill the void before Stranger Things season 5 comes back in November, or they want a particularly intriguing supernatural story, The Society is a great bet. I'd argue that The Society is even better than the Hawkins-set story for two reasons, mainly because the premise is so captivating. It's exciting to see Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and I'm interested in the final battle between Eleven, her friends, and this epic villain. But I still can't stop thinking about the creepy small town of West Ham, several years after the show arrived on Netflix. I also appreciate how The Society's premise forces the show to focus on the teenage characters and their terrifying plight. The show doesn't feel cluttered with too many characters or villains, and it's well-done.
Of course, since The Society only had 10 episodes, there wasn't enough time for frustrating plot holes or confusing moments that were never explained. But, while I think the supernatural mystery of Yellowjackets should remain just that, I believe that The Society season 2 would have given fans the answers they wanted. The show was moving in that direction, and the well-crafted season 1 finale gave fans some significant information.
The Society Was Cancelled Before Season 2, But It Deserved More
While Netflix renewed The Society for a second season in May 2019, it was cancelled in 2020. Christopher Keyser, the show's creator, told Variety, “This wasn’t a normal cancellation. This wasn’t about not having the audience or we didn’t believe in it anymore. There was a global crisis that changed all of our lives in the one year we were able to make it." Keyser also shared that he and the writers planned to write a graphic novel with the same plotline that would have encompassed season 2, but when the publisher closed down, that didn't happen.
Some TV cancellations feel particularly unfair, and fans definitely felt that way after learning that The Wheel of Time was over. It's tough when a show only has one season because it doesn't feel like a complete story. I was sad when The Society was canceled and think the show needs at least one more season to flesh out the main mystery and provide more answers.
In an interview with IndieWire, Keyser talked about how the dramatic relationships between the characters would continue in a possible The Society season 2. He said:
"New Ham under new leadership, [and] that’s not very stable because it’s a triumvirate of three people, none of who trust anyone else in that triumvirate. How that’s going to work and whether they will work together or will begin to undermine each other, we don’t know.”
While it doesn't seem likely, fans would love if The Society season 2 came to fruition sometime, and I'm definitely in that group.
