Mac Wright was a heavy metal fan and amateur storm chaser and his girlfriend, Kaylee Parker, were a young couple back in 2011, who were partying the night before the horrific tornado hit Joplin, Missouri. The party was ironically called a 'staying alive party' in reference to a Christian fundamentalist called Harold Camping who had a feeling that Judgment Day was coming on May 21, 2011.

Mac Wright

Well, turns out, he was one day late, and all hell would break loose the following day. Mac appears in the Netflix documentary and recounts his tale of waking up really hungover from the party, and noticing the storm brewing. He got in his car and dragged Kaylee and her brother along for the ride. Little did they know, the next 24 hours would be like stepping into an actual disaster movie. They eventually found safety in a store, and tried to encourage others to take cover after witnessing the horrific events first-hand.

Cecil Cornish Was A High School Student Who Faced Adversity But Ultimately Ended Up A Hero

Joplin, Missouri, is deep in the bible belt, with a church on every corner, and Cecil Cornish was a devout Christian who had to hide the fact that he was gay, and suffered extreme bullying at school because of it. Cecil was 17 years old at the time, and was working a part-time job at a cherry berry frozen yogurt shop, and he was on shift when the dreaded tornado hit. He stepped up and helped customers deal with the situation and became one of the heroes of that fateful day.

Steven Weersing Was One Of The Lucky Ones To Survive Life-Threatening Injuries

Miracles are something a large majority of the locals in Joplin, Missouri are on board with, due to a devout belief in God, and it's hard to argue with the story of Steven Weersing not being classed as one of those events. Weersing was 16 years old at the time, and ignored the warnings about the weather on May 22, 2011, and he was out driving in his car with friends when the tornado hit.

Weersing's car was lifted off the road, and swept into the eye of the storm. He was rushed to hospital, and lay in a coma after suffering a punctured lung and cracked ribs. Overall, he was extremely lucky to be alive, with doctors not very positive about his chances of survival after he contracted a flesh-eating fungus. However, he did make a full recovery, and told his story in the revealing documentary.
