Summary

  • "The Walking Dead: Dead City" got renewed for season 3, with a new showrunner.
  • Seth Hoffman, a writer on the original series, will be the new showrunner.
  • Many fans are eagerly waiting for the continuation of Negan and Maggie's story.

The Walking Dead will always be one of the strongest and most compelling zombie dramas, and fans of the long-running AMC franchise will want to hear this great update.

The Walking Dead premiered on AMC in 2011 and introduced viewers to dark characters like Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and endearing ones such as Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun). The series aired for 11 seasons and led to several spinoffs, some more interesting and successful than others. With an overall Rotten Tomatoes rating of 79%, the series received fairly high RT scores throughout its run, although the show wasn't without its flaws. As fans continue to wonder if Glenn could ever return, especially since Scott Gimple has talked about it recently, the franchise just got some positive news.

Deadline reported that AMC renewed The Walking Dead: Dead City for season 3. Fans have been waiting since the season 2 finale, which aired on June 22nd, 2025, to find out if Negan and Maggie's story is going to continue.

Deadline also reported that Seth Hoffman, who was a writer and co-executive producer on the original series, is the new showrunner. Eli Jorné held the position for the first and second seasons.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1 premiered in June 2023, with season 2 arriving just under two years later in May 2025. A behind-the-scenes look at season 2 teased Negan's beloved bat Lucille, and fans definitely saw plenty of this memorable prop in these eight exciting and compelling episodes. After the shocking events in the season 2 finale, it was impossible to imagine the show ending forever, at least not without a proper conclusion. While it's unclear how many more seasons the popular spinoff will get, it's good news that Negan and Maggie's journey will go on for at least one more season.

Dead City also features unforgettable characters such as a mute little girl named Ginny (Mahina Napoleon) and an evil, terrifying Savior member named Mile Jurkovic, also known as The Croat (Željko Ivanek). Although there are several spinoffs of The Walking Dead, the tricky history between Negan and Maggie makes Dead City work so well.

Hoffman wrote some of the most haunting The Walking Dead episodes, including several that deal with Maggie and Negan's complex and unhealthy relationship. He penned season 4, episode 8, "Too Far Gone," which features a horrifying threat from The Governor (David Morrissey). Hoffman also wrote season 6, episode 12, "Not Tomorrow Yet," which spotlights Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and gives her a dark storyline.

Hoffman shared that he's thrilled to be the new showrunner for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 and said:

"I’m excited to have the chance to dive back into The Walking Dead Universe and work to deliver another dynamic season’s worth of stories to this epic franchise. It’s a true honor to chart out the next chapter for Maggie and Negan’s iconic adventures in Dead City."

At the time of this writing, there is no official release date for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3. However, since production starts fall 2025 in Boston, it's possible it could arrive in 2026. In the meantime, fans can watch the upcoming third season of another excellent spinoff, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Season 3 premiere on September 7th, 2025.
