Summary

  • JDM played a father in "The Possession", a horror movie, before Negan.
  • "The Possession" portrays a terrifying exorcism plot with a likable protagonist.
  • JDM praised the film's horror theme and stated it's not a shaky-cam movie or found footage.

While Jeffrey Dean Morgan has starred in several horror movies, he appeared in his first scary film in 2012. This was a few years before he began portraying Negan Smith on The Walking Dead, a role he held from 2016 to 2022. Negan is one of the most complicated TV villains because while he presents himself as purely evil, he has many layers, and viewers see glimpses of his vulnerable side as the show moves toward its conclusion.

Since 2012, Morgan has played a small role in the slasher Bloody Axe Wound, the 2022 survival thriller Fall, and the 2021 supernatural horror movie The Unholy. His commitment to his characters is always impressive, no matter what story he's telling, but Morgan's role in a 2012 horror movie is one of his most engaging.

The Walking Dead Fans Should Watch Jeffrey Dean Morgan's 2012 Horror Movie The Possession

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Clyde in The Possession

The Possession was released in 2012 and Jeffrey Dean Morgan played Clyde Brenek, a father who also coaches basketball and who has two daughters, Emily (Natasha Calis) and Hannah (Madison Davenport). When Emily discovers an evil box while browsing a yard sale, Clyde is shocked and scared. It's one of the most unnerving movies about exorcisms and the image of Emily being taken over by this harsh spirit will stay with audiences. Fans can rent The Possession on AppleTV and will be invested in Emily's eerie story. Calis gives an excellent performance and audiences will believe she really was taken over by a demon.

The Possession joins a long list of films where demons take over characters in terrifying ways, and it uses the demonic possession trope well. Morgan's character Clyde is relatable and likable and makes the movie worth watching. He's scared of what's happening and wants to make sure he and his family are okay. But, instead of being a passive participant in this horrifying storyline, Clyde does his research so he can save Emily. Clyde's personal life is also fleshed out as he and his wife Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) are going through a divorce, but now they're working together to be there for Emily.

Sam Raimi, known for his beloved Evil Dead franchise, produced The Possession, which grossed $85,446,075 worldwide against a $14 million budget. While not every review of the movie was positive, Morgan's fans will want to see it since his character is so distinct from Negan. Although Negan causes trouble, Clyde is attempting to solve a huge problem that has taken over his family.

According to Syfy, the movie is inspired by the Los Angeles Times article Leslie Gornstein wrote called "A jinx in a box?" About a ybbuk box containing an evil spirit. It's a fascinating story as Gornstein discovered that an antiques collector named Kevin Mannis bought the box and then had some health struggles. Thankfully, he is fine now.

Fans can also check out Morgan's 2018 sci-fi movie Rampage, which, like The Possession, can be corny at times, but is a fun and attention-grabbing story.

What Did Jeffrey Dean Morgan Say About The Possession?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Possession

Jeffrey Dean Morgan always has a thoughtful and interesting approach to his roles, and it's always fun to hear him talk about his career. While it's great watching Negan Smith and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) in the spinoff Walking Dead: Dead City, Morgan has appeared in many projects besides the hit AMC series. He spoke to Bloody Disgusting about appearing in The Possession and called the movie "scary." He also said:

"It’s a film about people with some horribly scary things happening. The story itself drew me in... It’s The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, it’s not a shaky-cam movie. It’s not found footage ridiculousness."

When asked if he enjoys watching horror movies, Morgan explained:

"I haven’t seen a lot of them but I love getting a good scare sometimes and would like to see more. I love the ones that I do see."

Morgan can be seen next in the thriller movie Neighborhood Watch with Jack Quaid, and he will also star in The Boys season 5, which might not get a happy ending.
