Steven Yeun's Glenn Rhee is one of the most beloved The Walking Dead characters, and Scott Gimple recently answered a question that has been on everyone's mind: could Glenn come back to the post-apocalyptic universe?

Yeun has had a successful career since his time ended on the AMC drama, including playing a notable character in an episode of the Jordan Peele reboot of The Twilight Zone. Some of his most recent roles include Timo in Bong Joon Ho's 2025 sci-fi movie Mickey 17 and Danny Cho on the 2023 Netflix series Beef, which he also executive produced. But no matter which other characters he takes on, fans will always want to know if Glenn will still be part of The Walking Dead world.

Scott Gimple Talks About Whether Steven Yeun's Glenn Could Come Back To The Walking Dead

In an interview with ScreenRant, Scott Gimple answered a question about whether Steven Yeun could reprise his role of Glenn on The Walking Dead: Dead City. Gimple said:

"I think it comes to mind all the time. In some ways, it's a pretty obvious way to go. But it would obviously be enjoyable for all of us. Steven is a remarkably busy dude, though - not to say that these folks aren't. You never know, I guess I'd say, but we never went that far with it."

Glenn Rhee is introduced at the beginning of The Walking Dead and has intense relationships with Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan). Glenn and Maggie have a serious love story, which makes it even more upsetting when Negan kills Glenn in season 7, episode 1, "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be." Ross Marquand thinks that "we lost a lot of fans" after that scene, and while the show is known for violence and sad moments, it was definitely a particularly awful demise. Since Glenn has such a long history and important connection to both Negan and Maggie, it's hard not to wish that Glenn could come back at some point.

After his time as Glenn on The Walking Dead wrapped up, Yeun took on several voice acting roles, including Steve Palchuk on Trollhunter: Tales of Arcadia, Keith on Voltron: Legendary Defender, Final Cato along with other characters on Final Space, and Speckle on Tuca & Bertie. Yeun also starred in Jordan Peele's 2022 horror movie Nope and is starring in the upcoming The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

Since Glenn's tragic death, fans have been curious if Yeun would reprise the role. In 2018, the actor gave an interview to IndieWire and called Glenn's death "just a natural end." He said, “Everyone felt it. I wasn’t pining to be off the show. It was just the story, and you service the story. Also, there’s something very beautiful about the end, turning the page and closing the book.”

Although more than a few fans would be thrilled to see Glenn again, whether on Dead City or any The Walking Dead spinoff, there has still been plenty for viewers to get excited about. One of the best parts of the show? The fact that Negan still has his beloved bat named Lucille. The series premiered on June 18th, 2023 and also stars Logan Kim, Lisa Emery, Željko Ivanek, Gaius Charles, Keir Gilchrist, and Dascha Polanco.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 finale aired on Sunday, June 22nd, 2025. At the time of this writing, the show hasn't been renewed for season 3, but as was the case with The Walking Dead, the spinoff is so popular that it would be surprising if it didn't get more episodes.
