It's been a few years since it launched, but The Witcher 3 still stands out for its world, narrative, and structure. As CD Projekt Red's breakout hit, The Witcher 3 has been an important player on the RPG scene since it was released in 2015. The release of Netflix's television adaptation based on the books helped fuel a second surge in popularity, and its reputation has been solidified. A new mod takes The Witcher 3 to a whole new level, though.
It may not seem like it makes a massive difference, but a shift in perspective can have a radical effect on how a game looks and feels. That's especially true for The Witcher 3, which now has a mod that gives an incredible first-person perspective for both exploration and combat, two of The Witcher 3's core pillars. And it looks absolutely amazing.
Spotted by PCGamesN, a YouTube video of the "Gervant First Person" mod shows off what the world looks like from Geralt of Rivia's eyes. It has a dramatic effect on gameplay, showing off just how rich and detailed certain locations around the world are. The mod conveys how dramatic the different regions in The Witcher 3 feel, with one clip showing off an eerie dark forest while another shows the sun setting over a beautiful stretch of country.
It's all in the service of immersion, and it definitely pays off here. The Witcher 3 mods aren't as popular as, say, Skyrim's, but they've still been an important part of extending its lifespan beyond what it would normally be. Adding new content and tweaks is a good way for players to keep things fresh, which makes repeated playthroughs all the more interesting. The Witcher 3 already has something of a branching narrative, so it works well with mods.
And to its credit, Gervant First Person makes The Witcher 3 look like an entirely new game, and the combat appears to be relatively stable despite how acrobatic Geralt is while he fights. That's an impressive feat for any mod, but especially for a game that wasn't designed with a first-person camera in mind. Hopefully, more impressive first-person mods follow in the trail of Gervant, or at the very least, more mods that expand the scope of The Witcher 3. Not that it's lacking in content already, but there's no harm in more breadth for those that want it.
The Witcher 3 is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
