The Witcher 4 still does not have an official release date, but the game is already greatly anticipated by fans, and drawing inspiration from such a huge hit as Baldur’s Gate 3 is definitely good news for the fanbase.

Announced late in 2024, The Witcher 4 will be the direct sequel to the latest entry in the franchise, originally released in 2015. The Witcher 3 sold over 60 million units over the last decade, becoming a huge hit, and fans have been eager to know more about the sequel for a while. Luckily, CDPR is finally starting to unveil more details about the next entry, such as that The Witcher 4 will star Ciri as its protagonist instead of Geralt, and be set in the region of Kovir.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CD Projekt Red’s CEO, Michał Nowakowski, talked about how recent hits such as Baldur’s Gate 3 have affected the development of The Witcher 4. According to him, The Witcher 4 may be a very different game from Baldur’s Gate 3, but it still inspired the studio, especially with “how the characters can interact with the world,” hinting that the game’s world could be more interactive than in previous entries. Nowakowski clarified, however, that while The Witcher 4 will try to iterate based on what’s happening in the industry, it will still continue to be the classic open-world series, “sticking to what was The Witcher 3.”

CDPR Was Inspired By Baldur's Gate 3 For The Witcher 4's Development

The recent The Witcher 4 tech demo also gave fans a first glimpse of what to expect from the sequel. The tech demo showed a few scenes set in the northern region of Kovir, with Ciri riding her horse Kelpie in the wilds and talking to a contractor in a lively city.

While CDPR clarified that it was not actual footage of the game, but a demo created to showcase the Unreal Engine 5 technology, some interesting details about The Witcher 4 could be seen in the demo. For instance, new monsters from past games like The Witcher 2’s Imperial Manticore have been shown to appear in the world, and it looks like The Witcher 4 will have a much more reactive world, with livelier NPCs. In any case, fans should wait before CDPR unveils more information about the upcoming open-world RPG, as there’s still plenty to find out.
