Summary

  • Showrunner hints at possible spinoffs after The Witcher season 5, exploring new narratives and expanding the rich universe.
  • Despite past spinoff disappointments, upcoming projects like Sirens of the Deep offer exciting additions to The Witcher saga.
  • Fans can expect The Witcher season 4 to introduce Regis and potentially set the stage for more storylines.

As The Witcher season four looms over the horizon, fans of the fantasy series have high hopes that Netflix will produce the same quality viewing that the show gave fans in its earlier seasons. Even though there's a lot of pressure for season four to hit the same high notes as Henry Cavill did as Geralt, some viewers have doubts about whether Liam Hemsworth can fill his iconic leather pants as he takes the lead this time around.

Published between 1991 and 2012, Netflix’s The Witcher is an adaptation of Andrej Sapkowski’s popular novels, which tells the compelling lore of the fictional landmass of the Continent, where the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire lie and where creatures, both beasts and humanoids, roam. The fourth season of The Witcher is set to premiere this year, while season five looks like it could arrive in 2026. With so much controversy surrounding season four due to fan backlash regarding the recasting of Cavill, in turn, causing concerns that it would impact the show's dynamic, it seems as though its showrunner could still have ideas about continuing Geralt of Rivia's journey after season five ends.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, (via Redanian Intelligence) The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich talks about continuing Geralt's epic quests even after season five comes to an end in possible spinoffs. "We made a conscious decision to end the live-action show after season five, where the books ended. We felt very strongly about that, but it doesn’t mean that all Witcher storytelling has to be done," Hissrich revealed. Although Hissrich didn't disclose anything further about what spinoffs she had in mind, some avenues could include opening up the narrative surrounding Blood & Wine, or, since The Witcher season four will introduce Regis, furthering his lore as a higher vampire is also a possibility.

Hissrich also talked about her love for The Witcher' s Universe and how she is always on the lookout for ways to further its story by exploring the lore outside the main familiar storytelling aspects. “I love this world. I’m constantly looking for other opportunities to expand it outside of the main mothership show," HIssrich expressed. "I will never forget Kelly Luegenbiehl, who was the Netflix executive at the time, who sold the show with me. It was maybe about a month before the show launched on Netflix, and I came to her and I said, ‘I’m having all of these ideas about spin-offs.’ She was like, ‘Cool. Let’s see if anyone watches the show.’ Because, of course, you never know.”

The Witcher spinoff, Blood Origin, was, unfortunately, an underwhelming experience for many fans, so even though there are plenty of narratives to draw from, the idea of a continuation into The Witcher's rich world would make most die-hard Geralt fans just a tad nervous. There's also The Rats, another Witcher spinoff centered around teenage misfits, that has seemingly fallen off the face of the earth even though it wrapped filming in June 2023. However, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep premieres on Netflix on February 11 and so far, its trailer and animation look really exciting as it aims to tell the short story by Sapkowski.
