How To Command Units In Thronefall?

In Thronefall, your units are smart, and they automatically attack nearby enemies. However, troops without a commander can create loopholes that enemies can exploit. For instance, Racers always go for the castle, and they'll ignore every other structure in your kingdom. Since the castle is the heart of your kingdom, you never want to leave it unguarded. If the castle falls, the game ends, so always ensure that it's well-guarded.

You can prepare for these scenarios by commanding your units and ordering them to hold position at key locations, such as walls, barracks, and the castle. However, it can be quite tricky to figure out how to consistently command units and make them hold position, and if you've found yourself in a similar situation, the following guide should come in handy.

How Commanding Units Works In Thronefall

When commanding units in Thronefall, a small circle appears around your character and any unit that is inside that circle will follow your character. These units can be led to strategic areas in your kingdom, like exposed structures, chokepoints, or even act as a second line of defense if the first line falls.

You can command units by pressing "R" on the keyboard or square/Y on the controller. This action will cause all troops within the circle to rotate around your character, indicating that they have been commanded and waiting for further orders. Commanded units will follow your character, but they are unable to attack unless you pick the Commander perk after upgrading the castle for the second time.

You can press the "R" on keyboard or square/Y on the controller to withdraw command over your troops. Doing so will cause the troops to stay in the position you left them, but they are free to move on their own accord if they find enemies nearby. Holding down the "R" or square/Y will command units to hold position. Once units have been commanded to hold a specific position, they will remain there until you command them once again, the battle ends, or they die and respawn.

You can also use shortcuts to command specific units or even the entire army:

Command all army: Press "1" on the keyboard or R3 on the controller.
Command all melee: Press "2" on the keyboard or flick the right analog stick to the left on the controller.
Command all ranged: Press "3" on the keyboard or flick the right analog stick to the right on the controller.
Command all hereos: Press "4" on the keyboard or flick the right analog stick up on the controller.
Command one unit type: Press "F" on the keyboard or circle/B on the controller.

While you can rely on your troops to defend nearby structures, commanding them allows you to strategize upcoming battles. Since the game already tells you in advance about the enemy combination, you can command your troops to hold down key locations and slow down the aggressor's advance toward the castle.

As mentioned earlier, upgrading your castle for the second time allows you to pick the Commander perk, which enables commanded troops to attack as they follow your lead. Additionally, commanded troops move 60% faster and when ordered to hold position, these troops acquire 20% extra HP. These benefits are compelling reasons to take a more active role in commanding your units in Thronefall.
