Thunderbolts* Star Geraldine Viswanathan Responds To Question About Mysterious Character In The MCU Movie

One of the Thunderbolts* stars was asked about their role in the film, but they subtly denied it.

Marvel Studios recently dropped new footage for Thunderbolts* on X, formerly Twitter. It includes a scene of Viswanathan talking to someone over the phone. "No one's coming to save the day," she says. However, eagle-eyed fans noticed her accessory, which is easy to miss. Apparently, she's wearing a necklace with a songbird pendant. Reddit user u/KevinPigaChu shared a screenshot of Viswanathan's scene, including a magnified photo of her necklace. While the photo isn't very clear, it appears that it's indeed a songbird pendant. Some were surprised to learn that Viswanathan could be Songbird, but others somewhat expected it. There are very few details about Viswanthan's mysterious role. The only confirmed information is that her name is "Mel." The minute detail sparked rumors that she's Melissa Gold, aka Songbird.

It's Looking More And More Like Geraldine Viswanathan Is Playing Songbird In Thunderbolts*

Viswanathan was asked about her role when she sat down for an interview with Screen Rant in January to promote the romantic comedy movie You're Cordially Invited. In the film, she did a musical number with her co-star Will Ferrell. The two played father and daughter, Jim and Jenni, in the film. Since she sang in the movie, the interviewer asked her if she considered herself a "songbird." Viswanathan smiled and shook her head upon hearing the question. "I have no idea what you're talking about," she replied, seemingly denying what was probably obvious to fans. She doubled down on her denial, saying that she had not heard anything like that. The actress said she was nervous and reiterated that in the comedy movie, she sang, but she wasn't a bird.

It's intriguing why Marvel Studios has decided to keep Viswanathan's role mysterious. However, they probably did it to maintain suspense and generate fan speculation. Songbird may play a significant role in the film, and that's why they kept her role a secret as much as possible. In the comics, Songbird starts out as a villain named Screaming Mimi before she's recruited into the Thunderbolts. She's one of the most reformed members, and she genuinely wants to be a hero. She becomes the emotional core and/or conscience of the team. She could be a new fan favorite due to her strong emotional arc, and Marvel might have a huge plan for her to appear in future MCU films.

Thunderbolts* will hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
