Very few game developers can say they've defined, or even more so created, a genre, but FromSoftware is one of them. Its formula of highly-detailed worlds, deep lore, and a certain difficulty led to Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and most recently, Elden Ring. The latter has dominated the market over the past few months, but going all the way back to Demon's Souls, other developers took note.
The Soulslike genre was born out of this, and several games have taken this FromSoftware formula and made it their own. There are some good Soulslikes out there, as well as some bad ones, as such is the nature of game development. The latest, releasing on August 18, is Thymesia from OverBorder Games, and it has gotten a lot of attention over the past few months. Notably, it's been mostly compared to Bloodborne of all the games in FromSoft's catalog.
In Thymesia, players take on the role of Corvus who must recover his memories in a punishing world and save the kingdom of Hermes. To do so, he'll have to wield Thymesia's plague weapons, take on his raven form, defeat plague enemies, and much, much more, all with the grueling difficulty that comes with a Soulslike. But because of this difficulty, many may be wondering how long it takes to beat the game. Luckily, developer OverBorder Games has revealed that it'll take 7-9 hours to beat Thymesia, with a few factors playing into this.
Thymesia - How Long to Beat
Whereas many Souls and Souslike games can take hours upon hours to beat, it's worth remembering that Thymesia is a very ambitious but definitively indie project. It's not even the standard retail price for a video game, instead releasing at $29.99. It was when asked about this pricing decision that OverBorder Games suggested that it was due to the game's size and revealed how long it takes to beat. This does, as noted by the developer, depend on a player's skill level, meaning there's likely to be a lot of variance in that number. After all, a Souls game veteran could potentially beat it in less, but someone new to the genre could take a few hours more.
As many gamers will know, the price and length of a game do not equate to quality. The verdict is still out on how Thymesia holds up in the saturated Soulslike genre, but the Kingdom of Hermes, Corvus, and everything revealed so far is definitely interesting. Fans will know for themselves soon enough.
Thymesia is launching on August 18 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
