Players attempting to beat the first boss in Titan Quest 2 will soon find out that it's a formidable enemy that gives no quarter. Lunging forward and using enormous AoE attacks, the Gryphon (also known as Apollonia the Terrible) can One-hit unprepared players, so the best way to beat it is by using a prepared strategy.

This guide will offer players a lot of tips, information, and the ideal tactic to kill the Gryphon in Titan Quest 2, to progress further in the Main Quest. First, let's take a look at the Gryphon's attack pattern.

How to Beat the Gryphon in Titan Quest 2

How to beat Apollonia the Terrible Gyphon boss in Titan Quest 2

As mentioned before, the Gryphon is the first boss in Titan Quest 2, and players need to beat it as part of the main quest in Proti Island. Apollonia the Terrible has an attack pattern that consists of a series of melee attacks, a lunge, and a sequence of aerial blasts that propel wind waves and cause lots of damage. Here's a detailed list of its attack patterns and how to counter them:

  • Melee sequence: The Gryphon attacks three times, one time from the right side, one from the left, both at melee range, then a lunge with both claws that shoots a straight-line blast. Players at melee range can rotate to one of the sides to minimize damage, or time their dodge (though it's not recommended).
  • Lunge attack: A Blue Dot appears over the boss, and an AoE indicator appears marking the place where the Gryphon will land. Players need to wait until the Gryphon leaps into the air, then dodge 0.5 seconds later, to dodge a big AoE. If timed correctly, it will negate all the damage; if not, the player will suffer damage from the AoE wave (this attack kills players instantly if not dodged in time).
  • Aerial Blast: The boss will take distance from melee players, launching a blast of air in a straight line (this needs to be dodged). Immediately after, the Gryphon launches two series of air blasts in a trident pattern. Players need to stand between the columns of air to negate all damage.

For melee players, the best way to beat this boss is to circle around the boss using Whirwind (Modified Sweep skill), and bleeding it out or poisoning it in case they have weapons with +1 to Poison Damage. The Gryphon is resistant to most Elemental Damage, except Lightning, so using that is also an option, especially for hybrid builds or ranged players. Heavy attacks are a decent way to deal damage, but will leave the players exposed to the melee combo of the Boss that can chip away their life in a matter of seconds.

Ranged class players should be extremely careful, as Apollonia will take advantage of the distance to launch her Aerial Blast attack, spamming it until the players are dead. Use Barrier (Q) to mitigate the damage, and try to move away from the effective range of the attack, or stay in the middle of the air waves to avoid being damaged. Static range attackers and spellcasters are not going to have a good time fighting this boss, unless they keep attacking and moving, kiting the Gryphon and remaining vigilant of its lunges.
