Fortnite is no stranger to big collaborations and crossovers. Since the game's launch back in 2017, developer Epic Games has managed to secure team-ups with some of the biggest brands and franchises in pop culture. From Marvel to anime series, Fortnite has covered a lot of ground in this regard, and one of these many successful crossovers is with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Recently, TMNT was featured in another crossover with Fortnite, as TMNT villains like Bebop and Rocksteady made their way into the battle royale. These skins may have only been available for a short amount of time, but if Fortnite has proven anything with this continuing crossover, it's that Epic Games is skilled at nailing the character designs of its TMNT characters. If another action adventure title based around the martial arts foursome comes to fruition, taking note of Fortnite's character design is a must.

Epic Games Reveals When Fortnite Will Return to US iOS App Store

The legal standoff between Epic Games and Apple might finally be coming to an end, as Fortnite is about to return to the iOS App Store.

Fortnite's TMNT Skins Should Be the New Standard for Adapting the Crime-Fighting Turtles

Staying True to the Source Material

What makes the designs of Fortnite's TMNT skins so strong for an adaptation is that they stick to the initial cartoonishness of the original comics while still having their own spin on the characters. TMNT has been featured in a variety of video games, whether it be its own spin-offs or crossovers. When it comes to crossovers, some games get the character design down a lot better than others. Fortnite has proven to be the blueprint for what a solid video game version of Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo may look like. On the other hand, though, Call of Duty's recent TMNT match-up is wild, as the game's realistic graphics make the turtles look a little more monstrous than usual.

Two different TMNT games are launching this month. Teenage Mutant Turtles: Splintered Fate hits PS5 on May 20, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown launches May 22. The former will also come to Xbox on June 24.

The Last Ronin Could Open the Door to Some Strong Character Design

  • The Last Ronin was announced in 2023.
  • THQ Nordic is developing the game.
  • It's set to launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
  • A release target is currently unknown.

Inspired by the comic series of the same name, The Last Ronin follows Michelangelo as the last standing Turtle. Despite its dark subject matter, its teaser trailer has hinted at a more stylized version of the Turtles that keeps the franchise's comic book roots at heart. It's an exciting project that has a lot of TMNT fans eager for more information. It's unclear when THQ Nordic is planning a release window, but it will be fascinating to see what the character design has in store.

The Last Ronin is even set to get a live-action movie adaptation.

Fortnite Can Continue to Grow Its TMNT Partnership

Since the TMNT franchise is constantly showing up in other video games, Fortnite's exclusive skins are bound to pop back up again. From the four titular Turtles to April O'Neil, Fortnite has continued to make its TMNT crossovers eye-catching.

Of course, when it comes to crafting a strong TMNT game, action-packed gameplay is also incredibly important. However, solid character design can be just as beneficial to drawing players into a world. Striking a good balance between the two can really make a game stand out, and TMNT is a great franchise to bring such a balance to life.

Considering that The Last Ronin is waiting in the distance, it wouldn't be too surprising if Fortnite introduced its own skin inspired by the comic arc in the future. Only time will tell, but it will be interesting to see if Fortnite's TMNT skins influence character designs for future games.
