Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is finally set to return after a near five-year absence. The second season of the anime adaptation of mangaka duo AidaIro's shōnen manga is set to hit screens in January 2025, three years after an announcement regarding a brand-new adaptation which was dubbed "a restart" of the Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun anime.
The news regarding the upcoming second season of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun was revealed during a special summer event held at the Animate Theatre in Tokyo on July 28, and two trailers regarding the new Hanako-kun project were released.

As mentioned previously, the new Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun project was first announced in 2022, with the "First Installment" coming in the form of the series spin-off After-School Hanako-kun, which aired for four episodes from October to November 2023, with the sequel set to air another four episodes from October 7 this year. The upcoming Hanako-kun sequels will be produced by staff at Studio Lerche, which was responsible for the animation production of the first season of the anime, with Yohei Fukui (assistant producer, Mr. Osomatsu season 2) taking over the role of director from Masaomi Andō. Other staff announced include Yasuhiro Nakanishi (scripts, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War), who is responsible for series composition and character designs for season 1 and After-School Hanako-kun character designer Mayuka Itō.
In the case of the After-School Hanako-kun sequel, Masaki Kitamura returns as director, with series composition by Kazuma Nagatomo, sound direction by Satoki Iida, music by Takaki Hiroshi, with the aforementioned character designer assisted in the role by chief animation director Aya Higami (animation director, Scum's Wish). Mizuho Shimada (photography, Black Clover) serves as director of photography, while Saki Tada is responsible for the colour design. Cast for both incoming sequels includes Megumi Ogata (Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion) as Hanako-kun Akari Kitō (Nezuko Kamado, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Nene Yashiro, Minako Satō (Kiri Shirasawa, Pseudo Harem) as Aoi Akane, Shōya Chiba (Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, Classroom of the Elite) as Kō Minamoto and Shunichi Toki (Yamada Asaemon Kishō, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku) as Akane Aoi.

What Is Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun About?
Kamome Academy is a school famous for its supernatural occurrences, the most notable of which have been grouped into the Seven Wonders. Nene Yashiro is a first-year student longing for a boyfriend who one day summons the seventh wonder of the school: Hanako-san of the Toilet, a spirit haunting the girls' bathroom that can supposedly grant wishes for the right price. In reality, however, Hanako is actually the spirit of a mischievous young boy, and due to an unfortunate course of events, Nene winds up having to serve as his assistant as Hanako exorcises malicious supernatural entities to maintain the balance between the human world and the realm of apparitions. Over the course of their adventures, Nene learns that there's more to Hanako-kun than meets the eye.
The first season of the anime produced by Lerche ran for 12 episodes, airing from January to March 2020. The Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun anime is based on the manga of the same name created by mangaka duo AidaIro, serialized in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine from June 2014 until present. The Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun manga is licensed for distribution in America by Yen Press. It has been collected into 22 volumes as of July 2024, and had 8 million copies in circulation as of August 2022. The upcoming second season of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is set to premiere in January 2025, while the second season of After-School Hanako-kun will premiere October 7.
