Summary

  • Fans are disappointed with the new Tomb Raider: Legend PS5 port due to poor graphics and clunky gameplay.
  • Sony is being criticized by some fans for false advertising, having shown HD screenshots despite the actual game being 480p with virtually no upscaling.
  • Fans would rather see a complete remaster of Tomb Raider: Legend.

Tomb Raider: Legend was recently released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but fans are dissatisfied with the port that brought the PlayStation 2 classic to modern consoles. The seventh main entry in the Tomb Raider series, Tomb Raider: Legend served as a reboot to reinvent the character of Lara Croft and reimagine her origins. In 2011, a PlayStation 3 port of Tomb Raider: Legend was released as part of The Tomb Raider Trilogy, which was generally well-received among fans. However, the PlayStation 5 port is being criticized online for its poor graphics and clunky gameplay.

In Tomb Raider: Legend, Lara Croft races her former friend Amanda Evert to find the mythical sword Excalibur. She travels halfway around the world in the hopes of getting her hands on the artifact before Amanda, facing deadly enemies and mind-bending puzzles along the way. Tomb Raider: Legend not only received a PlayStation 2 release, but also versions for the Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and mobile phones. After Core Design's Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness was bashed by critics, publisher Eidos Interactive handed the reins to American developer Crystal Dynamics, who would go on to develop several Tomb Raider titles, including the upcoming Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered.

Amazing Tomb Raider Mods That Make The Games Even Better

The Tomb Raider series features a ton of diverse entries, and these mods improve the base game experience through visuals and mechanics.

Fans have taken to Reddit and Twitter to share their frustrations with the new Tomb Raider port, specifically targeting its 480p graphics with no signs of upscaling. Some disgruntled fans have even called the release "false advertising" and bash the extortionate $30 price tag. "When the [Legend] store page first went live, they were showing screenshots of the PS3 HD remastered version (which actually ran in HD with new character models)," streamer and modder Lance Mcdonald said on Twitter. These screenshots have since been removed from the PlayStation store.

Fans Are Outraged By New Tomb Raider: Legend PS5 Port

Fans have accused Sony of neglect, criticizing the lack of care taken to craft an updated version of the PlayStation 2 original. Others have pointed out that the re-release is an emulation, not a port, so expectations should be lowered. What embitters fans the most, it seems, is Sony's attempt at making Tomb Raider: Legend appear in line with the standard of next-gen console games that run Unreal Engine 5. But the screenshots posted to the PlayStation store were very misleading for fans who hoped for a much more visually appealing and polished current-gen version of Tomb Raider: Legend.

If nothing else, the whole situation prompts flashbacks to the largely condemned The Last of Us PC port, which became famous for all the wrong reasons. At this stage, it has become evident that fans would much rather developers work on a complete remaster of Tomb Raider: Legend than try to salvage what's already been done.
