Actress Françoise Cadol has sued Aspyr Media over the alleged use of artificial intelligence to replicate her voice in Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered. Cadol is well-known as the French voice actor for Lara Croft, and she has voiced the popular character in the games included in Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered.
Tomb Raider was one of the most popular gaming series of the 90s and early 2000s, and fans were delighted when Aspyr released Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered last year. The remaster was a hit, and it was followed by Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered in February 2025. The second trilogy scored significantly lower than the first, achieving an average critic score of 69 on OpenCritic, against a 75 for the previous one.
Oddly Enough, Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem Are in the Same Boat, and It's Barely Afloat
Despite being long-standing game franchises, Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem have ironically come together at a time when both could use some help.
French Actress Françoise Cadol Sues Aspyr Over AI Use in Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered
As reported by Le Parisian (via Game Developer), Françoise Cadol has recently sued the Embracer-owned Aspyr Media, alongside Crystal Dynamics, for allegedly using AI to replicate her voice in Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered without her permission. The lawsuit requests that the game be withdrawn from sale while the issue is addressed, and wants to determine how many copies have been sold to require compensation. Cadol’s lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, suggested that his client’s voice has been replaced by a “robotic imitation” in the lawsuit, which is “very choppy, lacking in intonation, or, on the contrary, poorly performed," but it has Françoise’s timbre.
According to Cadol, she was warned about this issue by fans after Aspyr rolled out an update on August 14, 2025, which added new dialogue lines. Since the release, the developers have put out multiple updates for Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered.
Earlier this year, Aspyr revealed that the Tomb Raider 4-6 Remaster would restore cut dialogue in Angel of Darkness, the sixth entry in the series. Restored content was seen as one of the selling points of the trilogy, as well as the graphical and gameplay enhancements.
While the controversy continues, the next entry in the Tomb Raider series is being developed by Crystal Dynamics. Last month, Crystal Dynamics was hit with more layoffs, letting an undisclosed number of employees go from the studio. It’s currently unknown how this will affect the next Tomb Raider, though, as the developers have claimed during previous layoffs that these changes would not impact the development of the title.
