Geoff Keighley has confirmed that Tomb Raider will make an appearance at The Game Awards 2025 on December 11. There's been a lot of buzz around the next entry in the classic series, but information about the game itself has been sparse since its reveal several years ago. Now, that period of silence may soon come to an end as the Tomb Raider franchise gears up for a big announcement.

Developer Crystal Dynamics first announced it was working on a new Tomb Raider game in 2022, four years after the last mainline entry, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Beyond that, though, the studio did not reveal much about the project. It told fans the new game would run on Unreal Engine 5, which was brand-new at the time, and that development had just started, but left anything about its gameplay, story, and place in the timeline up to the imagination. Three years later, and there still isn't much information out about it, but that could be changing soon.

Even With Radio Silence on a New Game, It's a Great Time to Be a Tomb Raider Fan

Crystal Dynamics has gone radio silent with its in-development Tomb Raider game, but even then, there are plenty of Tomb Raider projects in the works.

Tomb Raider Devs Will Make an Announcement Fans "Won't Want To Miss" at The Game Awards 2025

Mere days before TGA 2025, Keighley revealed that the show will offer "a look at the future" of the Tomb Raider series. While his wording technically doesn't specify that the announcement will be about the new game, Keighley also said it's "one you won't want to miss," which makes something major like a trailer or release date announcement seem more likely than a spin-off or crossover. At this point, any new information about the next game will be welcome news for fans, given the long, uneasy silence. Amazon, which will publish the title, confirmed that the new Tomb Raider is still happening in October 2025, but there's been little to no news about it since.

While it didn't reveal much, that update from Amazon was needed, as apart from giving fans a look at Lara Croft's new look, which hearkens back to the original Tomb Raider games, there's been mostly radio silence on the next entry. Some fans have also been worried about the title's fate after Crystal Dynamics confirmed its third round of layoffs in just eight months in November. Before the most recent round of layoffs, the studio had also been working on the now-canceled Perfect Dark reboot, so the firings may have affected that game more so than Tomb Raider, but whatever the case, it sounds like fans will finally get some more details within the week.

Seven years and counting since the last mainline game, it would make sense for Crystal Dynamics to reveal more about the upcoming one at TGA. As for when it could come out, an earlier financial report suggested the new Tomb Raider could come out in 2026 or 2027, following an internal delay. While those documents didn't specify that Tomb Raider was the delayed title in question, it seems like the most likely suspect in light of Perfect Dark's cancellation. If that timeline is correct, it would seem reasonable for Crystal Dynamics to announce a release date at The Game Awards, but nothing is certain for now.

The Game Awards begins on December 11, 2025, at 7:30 PM ET, so any Tomb Raider fans hungry for information only have a short wait before learning something more. There are also plenty of other big reveals and trailers to look forward to, so any gamer should mark the date on their calendar.
