Summary

  • Activision updates its socials with a new logo for the Tony Hawk video game franchise.
  • This has fueled speculation that an announcement may be on the horizon.
  • Re-releases of classic TH games would be appreciated, but others may prefer a brand-new title completely.

Activision has started promoting the 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, fueling anticipation that big announcements could be on the horizon. The original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater hit store shelves on September 29, 1999, and became an instant classic. The critically-acclaimed skateboarding game sold millions of copies and spawned a hugely successful franchise.

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater sequels took the series to even greater heights, with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 considered by many to be one of the best video games of all time. Pro Skater 3 and 4 are held in similar high regard, as are the Underground duology. Unfortunately, it was after the Tony Hawk's Underground games that the franchise started to falter a bit. American Wasteland, while great, didn't reach quite the same heights as its predecessors. Project 8 was another step down, as was Proving Ground, with Pro Skater 5's abysmal reception putting the franchise on hiatus. Activision eventually remade the first two games in a single package called Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, but the series has been quiet since that collection dropped in 2020.

Now there is new hope that a new Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game project of some description will be announced. As spotted by Push Square, Activision has updated the various Tony Hawk's Pro Skater social channels with new artwork, including a fresh logo for the series' 25th anniversary. Now, this is by no means a surefire sign that a new Tony Hawk game is being announced, but it does mean that fans will want to keep an eye on September 29 just in case. After all, what's the point of celebrating the anniversary if there's no product to promote?

Even if there's no new Tony Hawk video game in development, many fans would jump at the chance to revisit the classics. While updated versions of the first two Pro Skater games are available, the other Tony Hawk titles are trapped on older consoles. This means fans can't play beloved games like Tony Hawk's Underground without digging out their sixth-gen video game consoles, which is highly inconvenient. The fact that all the Tony Hawk games use licensed soundtracks makes it tricky to bring them to new platforms, but maybe some kind of agreement can be reached.

The latest word on Pro Skater 3 + 4 is that the project was rejected by Activision. Apparently, Activision wanted Vicarious Visions, now known as Blizzard Albany, to focus on Call of Duty instead. However, Xbox owns Activision now, and so maybe the new leadership has expressed interest in revisiting the franchise. If so, September 29 could be a huge day for Tony Hawk fans, but if not, it will be interesting to see what exactly Activision has in store for the franchise's 25th anniversary celebration.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a series of skateboarding games from Activision. The original trilogy of games, which were developed by Neversoft and released between 1999 and 2001, were huge hits with critics.

2002's Pro Skater 4 was also well received, although 2015's Pro Skater 5 received a brutal 32 Metascore on PS4. The first two Pro Skater games were remastered in 2020.
