Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 is set to land on consoles, PC, and Xbox Game Pass in just a couple of months. If it's been a while since you've pulled off any digital kick flips, you may want to jump into Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 to get reacclimated. Now is an excellent time to do so, as Best Buy has both the PlayStation and Xbox versions of the skating title down to just $19.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was everything fans wished it would be. The Best War Games's review notes that the title "is refreshingly set on being fun and staying true to its source material, two things that the game nails almost flawlessly. This establishes Pro Skater as not only one of the best games of the year but the entire console generation." The game sold well, too. After its September 2020 release, it became the fastest entry in the Tony Hawk series to surpass 1 million copies sold.
What Was Your Favorite Tony Hawk Pro Skater Level?
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 was a mainstay in my collection growing up, so the first Warehouse level got plenty of runs. Although, the absolutely absurd rotations you could get on the hidden bowl in the pool on the Cruise Ship was next level. What a great time for games it was back then.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 Almost Didn't Happen
Microsoft saves the day.
Fans initially thought the follow-up to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was a sure thing, but Activision canceled the project to focus even more heavily on the Call of Duty franchise. After acquiring the publisher, Microsoft came to the rescue and revived the remake. Ironically, they teased its announcement in a recent trailer for a Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 update. The game was later officially revealed and announced to be coming for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
The success of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 and the fan base's passion for it was what led to 3 + 4 being developed. The 1 + 2 remake, developed by Vicarious Visions, featured 21 professional skaters on its roster. It also had a trio of original characters that included Powell Peralta's mascot Ripper, a Roswell Alien, and a Jack Black portrayal of Officer Dick.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Game Modes
Like the original two games , Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 has a ton to do on the single-player side. The main attraction is Tours mode, in which you skate around levels to find the hidden S-K-A-T-E letters and VHS tapes while racking up high scores.
There's also Free Skate mode, where you can explore the game's levels and work on your skills without the pressure of a timer counting down. Single Session mode is where you can top the high score charts by achieving your best two-minute run. And Time Trial mode is a race-style setting in which you attempt to hit all the level's checkpoints as quickly as possible.
On the multiplayer side of things, you can go head-to-head through local splitscreen or online. There's a solid selection of modes to choose from, both casual and competitive. Here's a quick breakdown:
- Trick Attack: Most points in a time limit.
- Combo Mambo: Highest-scoring combo wins.
- Graffiti: Tag objects by landing tricks on them.
- Score Challenge: Hit a set score goal before others.
- Tag: Tag other players or avoid being tagged.
- Horse: Land better tricks than your opponent or get a letter.
