Tony Hawk is a name that’s synonymous with Skateboarding as a sport and as a video game. His Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise spans five mainline titles over 15 years. It has captured the hearts of gamers, skaters or not, since its release. As such, it’s no surprise that these titles are getting remade for modern devices and tastes. The latest remake, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, is set to release on July 11, 2025, and it comes with some interesting upgrades, changes, and new features.

The first two THPS games were remade by developer Vicarious Visions into Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, which received universal acclaim from fans and critics alike. It retained the original games’ classic gameplay mechanics and added some new tricks and skaters. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, now being remade by Iron Galaxy, seems like it will follow the same agenda, but with a few major tweaks.

With EA moving to revive the Skate franchise later this year, the original hardware-locked trilogy could use a bit of attention.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is a Faithful Upgrade to the Originals, But With a Twist

The THPS 4 Remake's Campaign Won't Feature a Free Roam Career Mode

What set 2002’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 apart from its predecessors is that it did away with the time limits for Career Mode. Players were free to roam the map and complete challenges at their own pace. While some enjoyed the challenge of timed runs of the previous games, others liked the pressure-free environment that THPS 4’s career mode had. The latter group could be disappointed that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 will be dropping the free-roaming career mode in favor of timed challenges reminiscent of the previous installments.

According to a recent interview, Iron Galaxy made this decision to make the two games in the bundle feel more cohesive. Some fans were not happy about these changes when they were announced and shown in hands-on previews. The developers listened to this feedback and added an option to extend each of the two-minute timed levels to 10 minutes or one hour as a compromise.

Players Will Shred With New Pro Skaters and an Unexpected Guest

Pioneers of the sport, Rodney Mullen and Bucky Lasek, will return to THPS 3 + 4. It goes without saying that one can also play as the game's namesake and GOAT of skateboarding, Tony Hawk. What's more interesting, though, is that the remakes will also feature the rising stars of the sport, like:

  • Margielyn Didal, a Filipino pro skateboarder who won a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games and competed in the Minneapolis X-Games in the same year.
  • Zion Wright, a member of the USA Skateboarding team who has won first place in various competitions like the 2018 Vans Park Series Pro Tour and 2015 Harvest Jam Sponsored Finals.
  • Yuto Horigome, a Japanese skateboarder who has won the Olympic gold medal for men’s street skateboarding two times.

Players who opt for the Digital Deluxe Edition will also unlock Doom Slayer and Revenant from the Doom series. Having an unconventional guest skater isn’t anything new, as THPS 1 + 2 featured the Area 51 Alien. Meanwhile, the original Pro Skater games also had Doom Guy and other fictional characters like Spider-Man, Darth Maul, and Shrek as unlockable skaters.

THPS 3+4 Will Also Feature Some Fresh Maps

THPS 3 + 4 will feature new maps, like Waterpark. This park is huge and split into different sections. The Playground features a slide that players can grind down to the drained-out Lazy River, a big vert ramp that lets players get the vertical momentum and hangtime they need to pull off their sickest mid-air tricks. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 Waterpark map also features some park rides that players can use to pull off some creative combos. Overall, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is shaping up to be a true upgrade to the originals. While Four’s new career mode changes may not be for everyone, the new parks, skaters, and overall updated graphical fidelity could make this remake worth getting.
