  • The change was a result of community feedback, making gameplay closer to the original title.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 remake appears to have readjusted missions, making it possible for players to engage in longer, more exploratory gameplay in addition to the standard two-minute missions. The change makes the upcoming Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 remake more like its original counterpart. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 will be released on July 11 with several purchase options, including one with early access.

Originally released in 2002, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 introduced an open-level design in which players could freely skate up to non-playable characters to receive missions. However, its predecessor, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, as well as the most recent addition to the series, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, have used the two-minute timer for challenges. This has worried some fans of the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, who have been waiting to experience the same level of freedom in the remake.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 Director Talks Breathing New Life Into 2 Beloved Skating Games

Following our hands-on preview of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, The Best War Games spoke with the game's director about how the project took shape.

It was revealed after a recent preview event for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 remake that the game has modified its gameplay structure with a customizable in-game timer. The Pro Tip shown in-game announced the change to players who were afforded a pre-release hands-on experience. Players will now be able to extend the two-minute limit, choosing either five minutes, ten minutes, or an hour. The missions are still going to be altered to fit this new timer-based gameplay in the re-release and feature no NPCs.

Longer Timers in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 Let Players Explore Larger Maps at Their Own Pace

The flexibility of the timer gives players more room to examine each level without a push to perform combos, which is what many have hoped for. This allows those who love the freeform flow of the original game to really take in what the maps have in store. With the higher-definition graphics of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 remake and new, larger, and more complex maps, the change makes exploring locations much more convenient. Thanks to the adjustable timer, the game also allows different kinds of official and community challenges.

The change seems to have been a direct result of community critique. Although the NPC-based missions are not coming back, there's one less thing to worry about for those who want to see gameplay closer to the original. With impressive new creations like the new Waterpark level for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 remake, the remake collection seems to be off to a good start.

It's not yet confirmed if similar timer options will be available in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 levels. The original THPS 3 was built around the 2-minute timed goal system, which would suggest that adding an extended timer might not make sense. However, this might even become a post-release update if players find the new format better. One thing that is confirmed, though, is that Bam Margera's removal from the game has been overturned.
