The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom released to rave reviews across the board, with a lot of particular praise given to the game's nearly-perfectly-implemented suite of abilities. Despite players' newfound ability to create complex machinery that somehow just works, the game did release with a few glitches.

Though many dupe glitches have since been fixed as of the 1.1.2 update, players have since discovered new ways to duplicate items in Tears of the Kingdom.

Updated June 2, 2023 by Erik Petrovich: Players who have not updated their game since the 1.1.1 update can still take advantage of the original dupe glitch for unfound items described here. But because this glitch doesn't work as of the 1.1.2 update, the old method to duplicate unfound weapons and shields can now be found below a new section detailing two 1.1.2 duplication glitches. But be warned – these new methods are a bit more convoluted than they were before Tears of the Kingdom was patched.

1.1.2 Dupe Glitches – Rock Octoroks, and Tarrey Town's Custom Home

Octoroks and Recall Duplication Method

Zelda Tears Of The Kingdom - Rock Octorok Sucking In And Repairing Weapon

One new method to duplicate items in Tears of the Kingdom involves Rock Octoroks and the Recall ability. Rock Octoroks can be found all over Hyrule, but particularly around mountainous areas and Eldin Canyon. According to The Hard Drive, once Link finds a Rock Octorok, there are four steps to follow.

  • Prepare Recall, so it can be activated without navigating the ability menu
  • Walk up to the Rock Octorok and drop the weapon or shield in front of it while it's in hiding. Players can also throw their weapon close to the Rock Octorok, just don't hit it.
  • Watch the Rock Octorok suck up the equipment, but use Recall right as it's about to enter the Octorok's mouth and be "swallowed" by it. The Recall timing doesn't have to be too precise, as long as players use the ability and select the weapon before it despawns in the monster's mouth, it should still be duped.
  • End Recall, pick up the item you placed or threw, and let the Octorok's animation play out. Both the Recalled item and the one the Octorok spits back at Link should not only be the same, but also be buffed and repaired.

This glitch will only duplicate one weapon once, because Rock Octoroks can only repair degraded weapons once before a Blood Moon resets them. Be sure to save the game before trying this duplication glitch as it can be tricky to pull off, and players only get one try.

Shock Emitters and the Tarrey Town House

Another duplication glitch that works with Tears of the Kingdom 1.1.2 involves the display rooms of the Tarrey Town home and the Zonai Shock Emitter device. First, Link has to finish the Mattison's Independence quest and buy land for his house. Then, he can purchase three different rooms to display weapons collected throughout Tears of the Kingdom.

Depending on which weapon Link wants to duplicate, he should purchase the corresponding display room – if he wants to duplicate a sword, buy a Weapon Stand room, but duplicating shields or bows requires their room. As described by GamerRevolution, precise timing is needed to pull off this dupe.

  • Place a Zonai Shock Emitter device so it touches the stand of the weapon type you want to duplicate, then hit it to turn it on
  • Walk close enough to the stand to see the display prompt, then slowly walk forwards until Link gets shocked
  • At the moment Link's shock animation starts, press the display prompt for the target of your weapon or shield dupe.

With this method, Link will take damage, but his equipped weapon should be both thrown to the ground and copied onto the display stand. Though this method doesn't clean up degraded weapons like the Rock Octorok does, it can be repeated over and over again (provided Link has the Hearts), and materials can even be fused to weapons to create copies of them. Head down to Tarrey Town to undo Fuse on these weapons for a bit of a convoluted way to dupe materials in TOTK 1.1.2.

1.1.1 Tears of the Kingdom Unfound Items Duplication Glitch (Old)

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Dupe Glitch Question Mark Unidentified Item

To duplicate a weapon, shield, or bow in Tears of the Kingdom, players must first find one out in the world that fulfills two requirements: it must be an equippable item that Link has not picked up yet, and it must be stronger than anything he currently has in his inventory. Players will know if the item they want to duplicate will work if it appears in the world as "???" With a green up arrow next to the question marks.

Before attempting the dupe, ensure that Link doesn't have any weapons or shields equipped. Players will need to have at least one of the same type of items they want to duplicate in their inventory, and it must be weaker than the target item. So, if a player wants to duplicate a shield, they must already have a shield that has worse stats than the one on the ground.

Once the player has nothing equipped except armor, and once they have correctly identified the item on the ground as an un-acquired upgrade, the process can begin. Pick up the item to trigger the new item popup window. Don't exit; press the + button to instead open Link's inventory directly from this pop-up.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Dupe Glitch Inventory Menu Sort Strength

Sort the inventory according to Strength with the Y button, which should put the new item on the far left. Then, equip another weapon or shield you don't mind losing, as it will be replaced with a copy of the one on the ground. Exit this menu, and confirm the pop-up window.

Link should appear to be holding the weapon or shield that was on the ground despite it not actually being equipped. Open up Link's inventory to find that the currently equipped weapon or shield shares the same model as the duped item but retains its original name.

Finally, drop the equipped item onto the ground, and it will permanently transform into another copy of the freshly-discovered weapon or shield – all stats and properties are the same with no strings attached, except losing the item that was replaced.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
