In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players will face off against a wide range of monsters and minions serving Ganondorf, many of which require players to approach combat strategically. One such foe is the Stone Talus, a hulking mass of living rock that can only be damaged when struck in its weak point.
Stone Talus can be found in a number of locations around The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's open world, and tougher variants, such as the Battle Talus can also be found in some areas. Stone Talus often disguise themselves as large rocks embedded in the ground, only roaring to life when players draw close or other nearby enemies are aggroed.
How to Beat a Talus
When fighting most variants of Talus, one of the easiest ways to hurt it is to stun it first. This can be accomplished by striking its weak point, the jutting piece of rock that looks like a chunk of ore Link could mine elsewhere in the game, with something that deals enough damage. Arrows can accomplish this when fused with
Bomb Flowers, for example, and indeed this can be a very effective way of stunning a Talus if players are able to line up a shot.
There's an even faster method of stunning a Talus which was not present in Breath of the Wild, however, which makes use of Link's new Rewind ability. Players should make sure the ability is selected and stay out of range of the Talus' melee attacks, waiting for it to draw its arm back and throw it at them, detaching it from their body in the process. Players should then activate Rewind and rewind the boulder, causing it to smash into the Talus and knock it to the ground.
Once the Talus has been stunned, players should climb up and smack that weak point with the best weapon they have to chip away at its health bar, with blunt weapons that are effective as mining tools being the best for this. Generally, players should be able to perform two complete combo attacks with a weapon before the Talus tries to shake them off. Jump off early to avoid taking damage from that, and either bait out another boulder throw or hit the weak spot with a bomb arrow to stun it again once it's back up. Rinse and repeat until the Talus falls, and don't forget to fuse a weapon to its heart to make an incredibly strong hammer/club that will be handy when facing other foes (or another Talus).
It can be useful to get under the Talus and use Ascend to quickly reach the top of it and hit the weak point, and with some careful timing, this could even be used to melee attack the weak point while the Talus is still standing.
How to Beat a Battle Talus
The Battle Talus is a variant of the Stone Talus that has been converted into a moving fortress by Moblins, who rides it and rain arrows down on their opponents. While this seems considerably more challenging at first glance, there are a few ways Link can even the odds. The trick here is to deal with the Moblins first, either at a distance by using arrows to pick them off or knock them off their perch or in melee by using Ascend from under the Talus to rise through it and onto their perch.
Once the Moblins are dealt with, this fight can be approached the same way as a standard Talus fight. Rewind Boulders or bomb the weak point, then smack the weak point until it falls.
