The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom features a huge amount of materials for Link to discover and use during his time in Hyrule. Some of these materials can be found in abundance in nearly every corner of the realm, requiring very little effort on the part of the Hero. However, there are also materials that are incredibly tricky to find and can cause Link a great deal of frustration if he does not know where to begin. These items are often required for Tears of the Kingdom's high-level armor upgrades and can feel like a significant roadblock when they are seemingly unobtainable; for many players, the Energetic Rhino Beetle falls into this category.

This rare creature is needed to fully upgrade one of the game's most desirable armor sets and can also be used to create highly potent elixirs. Luckily, there is a reliable method for acquiring or even farming this beetle, which will be thoroughly explained in this guide.

Where to Find Energetic Rhino Beetles in TotK

TotK-ERB-Looking-Over-Great-Sky-Island

Technically, Energetic Rhino Beetles can be found in any of Hyrule's tropical and temperate zones, usually hanging onto trees. One of the most common places they can be found on the surface is the Bronas Forest (1471, -3290, 0070), which sits on the western shore of Lake Floria. Unfortunately, the beetles in this region have an annoying habit of resting so far up a tree Link has no chance of grabbing them before they fly away. Luckily for Link, there is a far more reliable location to find the Energetic Rhino Beetle.

The best place to easily find Energetic Rhino Beetles is on the Great Sky Island. While it may seem counterintuitive that one of Tears of the Kingdom's rarest critters is found at the opening location, using the method outlined in the next section will reveal that the island is crawling with them.

How to Get the Energetic Rhino Beetle

TotK-ERB-1

Like all beetles in Tears of the Kingdom, Energetic Rhino Beetles are found on the trunks of trees. Because of this, Link will want to head to the more forested areas of the Great Sky Island. A great place to start is the Ukouh Shrine (0159, -0992, 1415), as it overlooks several prime locations. Before setting off to catch his quarry, Link will need to perform an extremely helpful action: set the Sensor + to react to Energetic Rhino Beetles.

If Link has not yet completed "Presenting: Sensor +!", he can follow Robbie and Josha's quest line to do so, unlocking this incredibly helpful sensor upgrade along the way.

Getting a Photo of The Energetic Rhino Beetle

If Link has the Sensor+ upgrade but does not yet have the Energetic Rhino Beetle's picture in the compendium, the Sky Island will still be his best bet to get it. Link should wear any stealth armor he possesses, or take a sneaky elixir before proceeding, as beetles are very easy to scare. Make sure to head out at night, as the beetle is much easier to see when there is less light. This will be the hardest part of the entire process, but be patient. As long as Link cautiously approaches each tree, using a very slow and steady approach, he will find a beetle to photograph.

Step-by-Step Guide to Catching Energetic Rhino Beetles

Step 1: Set the Sensor

Set the Sensor to the Energetic Rhino Beetle by heading to the map and pressing Y to bring up the sensor menu. Select "Change Target," then scroll down to number 83 in the "Creatures" section of the compendium.

Step 2: Set out at Night

Make sure Link begins his search at night. There seems to be a much higher number of beetles out, and the golden shell is much easier to see in low light. To change the time of day, Link can start a fire using flint and wood or head to the fire visible from the Ukouh Shrine (0164, -0973, 1415)

Step 3: Search the Forested Areas

Begin looking through the forested areas on the island's western edge. Link can follow the edge down to the southern tip of the island, then head up the center section, which is also heavily forested. When doing this at night, the Sensor should go off multiple times.

Step 4: Approach Target with Caution, Repeat Process

When the sensor goes off, do not be too hasty. It is far safer to begin approaching slowly, gradually approaching the target, and crouching the whole time. Oftentimes, the beetle will be on the opposite side of the tree from Link, so make sure to circle the target tree very slowly. When the beetle is spotted, continue crouching until the creature's name pops up on screen. This means Link is free to press A and retrieve the beetle. Continue this process all along the route.

Final Notes on Catching Energetic Rhino Beetles

TotK-ERB-Menu

While this is currently the most reliable method for catching these tricky critters, this is by no means a particularly fast process. Link will often be just about to reach his quarry when a bumbling Chu-Chu pops up from the ground to ruin his night. When this happens, do not fret. Dispatch the enemy, and know it will not return until the next Blood Moon. This may happen several times during Link's first pass around the island.

If the player feels that too many beetles have escaped or the Sensor is simply not being triggered, try heading to a fire and passing time until night. Head out again, and collect as many Energetic Rhino Beetles as needed.
