Summary
- Positions in Tower of God reflect traditional combat roles but allow for deviation, creating dynamic character interactions in battle.
- Each Position has a specific function and role, similar to positions in soccer, enhancing teamwork and strategic gameplay in the tower.
- By understanding the unique abilities and responsibilities of each Position, fans can appreciate the depth and complexity of the Tower of God universe.
In the first season of Tower of God, various concepts were introduced, the relevance of which would only be emphasized much later on in the story. One such concept is that of Positions. Climbing the tower is a difficult feat, and impossible for most people to do alone, so most will do so in teams, which have five core positions that are integral to survival in the tower.
Tower of God author SIU is known to be a fan of football (soccer), and it is likely that the Positions concept arises from five-a-side football or futsal. Here's an in-depth explanation of the five positions in Tower of God.

These unsolved mysteries not only deepen the lore of Tower of God, but also keep fans engaged, creating intrigue and endless speculation.
The Positions And Responsibilities
Each Position's Basic Function
Simply put, the Positions refer to the roles taken up in a combat situation, which are often done as team bouts. While it is possible for a team to engage in battles without assuming any type of set formation, the Positions are the most efficient way to get the best out of a team. While each person will have their specific role in a battle, it doesn't limit an individual to a single Position. The table below summarizes the five primary Positions and the role they have in battle. To better illustrate the idea, a football equivalent of each Position is also provided, but that's just meant to supplement the basic premise of each Position.

A Detailed Analysis of Each Role
Positions and Examples of Characters Who Fit Those Roles
While there may be general ways for each Position to be fulfilled, a lot of characters perform their duties in ways that deviate from the traditional understanding of the role. Bam is a Wave Controller, but acts like a Fisherman, while Anaak, a Fisherman, is also capable of being a Spear Bearer.
- Fishermen are like infantry, and generally use physical attacks to obliterate enemy forces. Weapons of choice include Needles and Reel Inventories (like the apparatus Ja Wangnan uses to deploy his Poké-bombs), but expertise in both weapons is rare. Anaak Jahad was a Fisherman in the first team battle back in the first season of Tower of God. Fishermen will generally be stronger than most in order to successfully perform their duties.
- Spear Bearers are essentially snipers who use spears to attack the enemy from a distance with devastating accuracy. While long-ranged attack is their main prerogative, Spear Bearers can also use their weapon of choice in close-range combat. Rak, the Crocodillian from the first season of Tower of God is the perfect example of a Spear Bearer.
- Scouts are usually swift and run ahead to learn more about the enemy and the environment, but in addition to reconnaissance, they can help the Fisherman when needed. Shibisu and the yet-to-be-introduced Dan (who looks like Dan from Street Fighter) are examples of Scouts.
- Light Bearers (also called a "Lighthouse Keeper") are the most support-oriented of the Positions because of how crucial their role is. They store and relay vital information to their teammates, while also using the light from their Lighthouses to guide them since many battles in the tower are fought in the dark. Rachel and Khun Aguero Agnes are Light Bearers. Lighthouses are glowing devices made from a substance called "Suspendium". Depending on the battle, Light Bearers may take a frontal or a rear position, which have their own advantages and requirements. In a frontal position, Light Bearers are direct participants in combat and need to be adept at Shinsu control as well as controlling their Lighthouses. In a rear position, the Light Bearer will assume the role of a command centre using data to come up with battle strategies.
- Wave Controllers are considered the maestro of battle as they manipulate Shinsu to affect various aspects of combat. They can be more support-leaning, or more offensive. Of all the Positions, the Wave Controller is the rarest to be selected for. Generally, they will use some kind of apparatus to help them better manipulate Shinsu, but there are those who don't need them. Jue Viole Grace (Twenty-Fifth-Bam) is a Wave Controller.
