Transformers: Every Major Faction In The Franchise
Fans of Transformers already know about the Autobots and Decepticons. However, plenty of other factions populates the series' universe.
From classic originals to imaginative newbies, the Combiners have proven to be a diverse bunch of powerhouse robots. Typically formed out of five other Transformers, the strength and power of the Combiners always guarantee action, destruction, and spectacle for fans to enjoy. These towering machines are a perfect showcase of the franchise’s eyebrow-raising emphasis on scale. The following Combiners have been ranked based on both their abilities and contributions to their respective teams.
6 Computron
A Tech-Savvy, Quick-Thinking Combiner
- Affiliation: Autobots
- First appearance: Transformers G1 - Grimlock's New Brain
The Technobots successfully brought intellectual power to the Autobots with this high-tech, brainy warrior. Computron serves as the fusion of Afterburner, Lightspeed, Nosecone, Scattershot, and Strafe.
A brilliant thinker and analytical Combiner, Computron is a master of quickly putting together effective battle strategies. His wits have frequently come in for the often-outmatched Autobots in their long-running war with the ruthless Decepticons. While this Combiner is far from the most physically impressive or menacing one on offer, his tactical genius and technological advancements make him a very useful ally for the heroic Autobots.
5 Bruticus
A Deadly, Battle-Hardened Villain
- Affiliation: Decepticons
- First appearance: Transformers G1 - Starscream's Brigade
This aptly-named Combiner is a merciless killing machine built specifically for high-octane warfare. Bruticus is the fusion of the five Combaticons: Blast Off, Brawl, Onslaught, Swindle, and Vortex.
Unsurprisingly, this battle-hungry Combiner relies on heavy-duty firepower in combat. Frequently overpowering foes with his sheer volume of offense, Bruticus is a powerhouse who has frequently caused trouble and destruction for the Autobots. Despite his strengths, Bruticus has not lived without setbacks over the years. Most alarmingly, he was the first Decepticon to fall victim to the infamous Hate Plague. While lacking in a lot of finesse compared to some of the more aesthetically pleasing Combiners out there, Bruticus’ raw power and aggression make him a major threat.
4 Menasor
A Temperamental, Rebellious Threat.
- Affiliation: Decepticons
- First appearance: Transformers G1 - The Key to Vector Sigma Part 2
The Decepticons’ menacing answer to Superion serves as the fusion of the Stunticons. Menasor comes together through the fusion of Breakdown, Dead End, Drag Strip, Motormaster, and Wildrider.
21 Best Transformers Series, Ranked
The Transformers series has had plenty of TV series over the years. How do they stack up against each other?
What makes the heavily weaponized Menasor especially dangerous is that he is prone to extreme mood swings and fits of range. The Stunticons are notoriously rebellious, with even Megatron often struggling to keep them in check. Needless to say, their bad behavior is only amplified when they fuse. Between his destructive offense and his mercurial rage, this enormous Combiner is an immensely dangerous, formidable force.
3 Superion
A Heroic, High-Flying Combiner.
- Affiliation: Autobots
- First appearance: The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2
Unsurprisingly, this powerful Aerialbots' Combiner is a candidate for the peak of airborne combat in the Transformers franchise. Superion is the fusion of the five Aerialbots: Air Raid, Fireflight, Silverbot, Skydive, and Slingshot.
Superion has frequently come in handy for the Autobots as their own weapon of mass destruction in war. While not quite as earth-shatteringly powerful as the likes of Devastator, Superion still manages to get the job done thanks to his superior maneuverability and technical prowess in combat. Prophesied to arrive by Optimus Prime before the Aerialbots even realized they could fuse, Superion has time and again come in handy for the Autobots in times of war.
2 Predaking
A Vicious Combiner With A Distinctive Design.
- Affiliation: Decepticons
- First appearance: Transformers G1 - Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5
The fierce Predaking is a more recent addition to the dangerous Combiners. This beastly giant comes together through the fusion of the five Predacons: Divebomb, Headstrong, Rampage, Razorclaw, and Tantrum.
Predaking stands apart from most Combiners due to his superior intellect. Where many Combiners often incur psychological damage from the fusion of five minds, the Predacons' shared instincts and interests allow them to merge more cohesively, forming one dangerous new personality in the process. With animalistic fury, Predaking has proven to be a relentless beast to take on for the Autobots. With wings, claws, and a dragon-like appearance overall, this imaginative combiner has set itself apart as one of the franchise’s most menacing and visually distinctive efforts yet.
1 Devastator
An Almost-Invincible Powerhouse Formed By The Constructicons
- Affiliation: Decepticons
- First appearance: Transformers G1 - Heavy Metal War
Formed out of the aptly-named Constructicons, the gargantuan original is a classic figure in the Transformers mythology. Devastator is brought together by the combined powers of the six Construction Decepticons: Bonecrusher, Hook, Long Haul, Mixmaster, Scavenger, and Scrapper.
Devastator’s monumental size and immense power make him a force of destruction. For the Autobots, this menace has proven to be near-unbeatable in the past, relentlessly running through full teams of the noble Transformers collective with disturbing ease. The slick manner in which the Constructicons fuse together to form this fearsome juggernaut laid out the blueprint all combiners have followed since, making him a seminal character in the early days of the original animated series.
