Fans of Square-Enix's 2D RPG Octopath Traveler were treated earlier this year to the announcement of Triangle Strategy, an upcoming tactical RPG being developed by the team behind Octopath Traveler. The Final Fantasy Tactics-inspired RPG debuted with a demo released alongside the announcement and the upcoming title has received numerous trailers since its announcement in February. Now, the newest trailer for the game introduces some of the wide cast of characters to be featured within the strategy game.
Octopath Traveler released in March of 2018 to critical and commercial success. The RPG marketed on its branching stories sold over a million copies within six months of its release and was nominated for several awards, winning three such honors from Japanese gaming publication Famitsu. Following Octopath's success, Square-Enix announced Triangle Strategy as a spiritual successor with the game shifting to being a tactical RPG akin to Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. Now, fans have received a first introduction to some of Triangle Strategy's major cast members.
The trailer titled "Challenge Your Convictions" reveals some major characters from the game's three nations of Glenbrook, Aesfrost, and Hyzante. Alongside the game's male and female leads in Serenoa and Frederica, fans are introduced to some members of the three regions' royalty like Glenbrook's prince Roland and the Kingdom's strategist Benedict. The trailer also introduces a slew of side characters featured within the game's warring nations, such as the spy Anna Pascal, Glenbrook's kingsguard Hughette Bucklar, and several others. Players previously got a chance to meet many of these characters in Triangle Strategy's early demo.
Alongside the character introductions, the trailer also features several other key aspects of Triangle Strategy. The game's "HD-2D" graphics system has received an upgrade, listed as a version 1.1, from the system used in Octopath Traveler. Triangle Strategy will feature a similar branching storyline to that of its predecessor with player choices altering the progression of the story. How heavily character decisions will play into the overall progression of the game's story remains to be seen, but the trailer shows off scenes like a character using a spell called "Sunfall" and potentially shifting environments through their actions.
The upcoming release of Triangle Strategy will have big shoes to fill, looking to follow up the massive success of Octopath Traveler. The Square-Enix RPG was an immediate hit among RPG fans and Octopath passed 2.5 million copies sold earlier this year with many fans praising its battle system and character progression. Promising strong character development similar to that of its predecessor, Triangle Strategy will look to stand as the next big strategy game on the Switch when it releases next year.
Triangle Strategy is scheduled to release on March 4, 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.
