True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has given fans exactly what they've been craving for years, and it's a tease regarding the possibility that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey could reprise their roles from the crime TV series in a brand-new story. Viewers saw Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) team up in the first season of HBO's anthology crime drama eleven years ago in 2014, in which the duo took on the role of homicide detectives set the task of investigating murders, and in turn, unraveling a host of dark and sinister secrets, not only about victims but about themselves too.
Touted as one of the greatest modern detective shows and one of the greatest crime shows ever made, True Detective season 1 is widely regarded among crime lovers as the best out of its four seasons due to how dark and disturbing its storylines are, and also how incredibly McConaughey and Harrelson were able to merge with ease into their complex characters. The dynamic between the pair led to much of its draw for fans due to their contrasting personalities and philosophical clashes, creating a compelling relationship that viewers just couldn't stop watching. On Rotten Tomatoes, season one of True Detective gained a very respectable score of 92% from viewers and critics, noting that Harrelson and McConaughey's performances were some of the best shown on TV as the pair plunged onlookers into the depths of the human soul.
True Detective: What Is The Crooked Spiral?
The crooked spiral has been a symbol in True Detective since its first season. Now it's making a comeback with a vengeance in Night Country.
True Detective Creator Teases Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey Return
Talking on the 'Nothing Left Unsaid' podcast (via Variety), True Detective's Nic Pizzolatto revealed that they have an idea for a new storyline for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey's characters, Cohle and Hart, and that he hopes that it will materialize in the future. "I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day." Pizzolatto also stated that he discussed the idea with both of the actors to gauge how they felt about coming back again, revealing that they were "open to it." However, at the moment, the idea of a new story is firmly kept in Pizzolatto's mind as he hasn't put pen to paper, and nothing official has been announced, but the fact that both actors would be interested again in jumping back into their roles for more True Detective episodes is a very promising start.
"It’s not something I’ve written or anything, it’s just in my head, and we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it. I think the guys are open to it, it’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
At the start of the year, following hot on the heels of a successful fourth run of the series, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, revealed that season 5 of True Detective is in the works. Casting for the fifth is expected at some stage this year, and production is set to begin in the next few months in New York with an expected premiere in 2027. However, it's not clear if or when Pizzolatto's story idea will come to light since he criticized one aspect of season 4's lore as "so stupid", as well as being "spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness and dealing with such dark materials", but since time has now passed, Pizzolatto's input would be very well received by fans yet again as there's no doubt about his greatness at navigating such a spectacular season one.
