Summary

  • Twitch streamers can now disable discounts on limited discounted gifted sub events.
  • The change won't affect Twitch's SUBtember event, or standard gifted sub bundles, where discounted subscriptions still benefit streamers as usual.

Twitch is adding new opportunities for gifted sub discounts while also giving streamers the opportunity to opt out. The change could potentially be felt by any Twitch viewers depending upon how their favorite streamers choose to handle it.

Twitch has made significant changes in recent years, including changing the price of subscriptions and introducing monetization options for Twitch accounts that aren't partners or affiliates. Some of these changes have been applauded by the community, but it remains to be seen how this one is taken overall.

Twitch is introducing new gift subscription bundle promotional discount event periods, which may please fans who want to support their favorite channels by buying gift Twitch subs in bulk. However, it's also giving streamers the choice to completely opt out. The streaming platform is gearing up to run its first periodic gifted sub bundle discount event on March 27 at 10 am through March 31 at the same time. During this new event, bundles of 5 or more gift subs will be discounted by 35%. However, if Twitch streamers prefer to not be a part of the new promos, they can opt out by visiting their dashboard, going to monetization and subscriptions, and then hitting the toggle for Shared Gift Subs Discounts. Streamers should note that this option isn't available while actively streaming, so it'll need to be turned off before going live if the channel doesn't want to participate.

Twitch Sub Discounts Change in Some Ways and Don't in Others

While frequent Twitch gifters might be concerned about their chances to give away large sums of subs for a discounted price, the established, existing opportunities aren't going anywhere, and aren't included in the new opt-out choice. However, if a channel wants to opt out of the newly-introduced discount events, their viewers won't be able to take advantage of the greatly reduced price during these specific discount periods. Twitch streamers can expect to get the same cut of each sub that they ordinarily would, but due to the discount on bundles of subs during the event, the amount earned per sub will be lower if they participate during this period. However, Twitch believes that these events will lead to a larger number of gifted Twitch subs in general, which could help channels to get more attention and ultimately mean earning more from a higher quantity of gifted subs overall. It'll ultimately be up to each streamer to decide what the right path is for them, and the benefits or disadvantages may become clearer after the first event has wrapped up.

Also, users and streamers should be aware that the annual SUBtember event isn't changing the way that it works. This new ability for streamers to opt out won't apply to this particular period of sub discounts. SUBtember is usually seen as a good thing and an exciting time for streaming, especially since Twitch adjusts for the discounted sub cost by taking a smaller cut for itself and giving the streamer the same amount they would have ordinarily earned from a normally-priced subscription.
