Summary
- Starting October 1, Twitch Tier 1 subs on iOS and Android will cost $7.99 in 40+ countries.
- Only Tier 1 subs are affected, so Tier 2 and 3 subs will remain the same.
- Email notifications will be sent to affected users. The hike aims to offset Apple and Google fees.
Twitch confirmed on social media that users in over 40 countries, including the US, will see a price increase for Tier 1 subscriptions on the iOS and Android mobile apps at a similar rate to previous hikes made in 2024. The Twitch subscription price bump will take effect starting on October 1, but users who subscribe via desktop browsers will not see any changes, nor will any Tier 2 or 3 subscriptions be affected.
Though Twitch has struggled to be profitable since its 2014 acquisition by Amazon, that has not stopped the service from retaining a dedicated viewership thanks in no small part to games such as Palworld that have proven dominant on the platform. In addition to finding ways to gain some form of profitability, Twitch has also introduced tools for streamers to combat harassment in their chat rooms and also worked with tech giant Nvidia to bring new encoding methods that are capable of making streaming on the platform a smoother experience.
Twitch Has Banned EthanNestor
Ethan Nestor, also known as CrankGameplays on YouTube, receives a Twitch ban after finishing a successful subathon on the platform.
With July 2024 already seeing the price of Tier 1 subscriptions increase to $5.99, another hike is waiting in the wings for certain users. According to a social media post by Twitch Support, the price of Tier 1 subscriptions, including gifted ones, will increase in over 40 countries such as the US, starting on October 1. However, this price increase will only affect users who subscribe to their favorite Twitch channels via the mobile app on iOS and Android. The new price increase on the Twitch mobile app will be $7.99 in the US, but this will not affect Tier 2 or Tier 3 subscriptions. Ergo, this price increase will once again make subscriptions via desktop browsers cheaper by a dollar.
Twitch Mobile Subscription Fees Will Go Up
- Twitch subscriptions on the iOS and Android mobile apps will start at $7.99 as of October 1.
- The subscription increase only affects Tier 1 subscriptions, including gifted subs.
- Tier 2 and Tier 3 subscriptions remain unaffected.
- The price increase is similar to the July 2024 price hike, and will not affect desktop users.
Twitch stated that it will notify users in affected countries via email, so users are encouraged to check their inboxes in the coming days. The price increase on iOS and Android is a way to offset the fees levied by Apple and Google on developers who use the App Store and Google Play Store. Twitch clarified that this mobile price increase is the same one that already took place on desktop browsers, as opposed to a new one altogether.
Despite a few users reiterating that the hike is intended to bring the desktop and mobile subscription prices in line, the move from Twitch was met with wide disapproval on social media. Given that Twitch remains in an unprofitable state, it remains to be seen how much the price hike will turn things around for the Amazon service.
