The last few months have been busy for gaming giant Ubisoft. July brought the announcement that four titles headlined by Splinter Cell VR and Ghost Recon Frontline would be canceled as well as a significant portion of titles were also delayed. As much as that left some fans disappointed, the developer kicked off the month of July by announcing the shutdown of online services and the end of support for a myriad of older titles would commence on September 1, to much fan frustration.Shutting down services isn't anything new in any industry as companies look towards the future and relegate resources to the next big thing. However, the problem Ubisoft presented fans with was twofold; players would lose access to multiplayer services of their favorite titles as well as they would lose access to any DLC they paid for. Alongside that, if a game had an online-only campaign mode, players would have to play the game in offline mode. The shutdown was planned to take place on September 1, but Ubisoft announced an extension giving players until October 1.RELATED: Assassin's Creed Rift's Official Title, More Details Leaked Parts of the online service shutdown were set to impact certain platforms differently, such as PC losing DLC access for a few Assassin's Creed titles, Far Cry 3, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, versus consoles retaining the ability to access DLC at any time. Ubisoft has gone on to clarify that the extension gives fans the ability to preserve the DLC only if they activate said content before October 1 hits. It is important to note that this only impacts the original releases of titles so remastered games will retain their services.

Ubisoft also announced that a dedicated team will upgrade the online services for Anno 2070, allowing players to continue enjoying its online features. Space Junkies, Ubisoft's HTC Vive and Oculus Rift title, was another game that was mentioned to be shut down, and that remains the same as it will not see an extension due to it being a multiplayer-only experience. The original Ubisoft announcement of the shutdown was met with plenty of fan disappointment, and while extending the planned shutdown of the online services is a certainly welcome gesture, some fans still aren't pleased with the solution especially since it's only seeing a month-long extension. As Ubisoft looks towards the future, be sure to enjoy the time left before the above titles are turned off for good.
