The Career mode in Umamusume: Pretty Derby is surprisingly complex, and choosing the best stats to focus on during training sessions is the key to success. The game does a poor job of explaining the exact specifics of each stat, but you'll need to learn what each one does if you want to win races in Umamusume.

Thankfully, there are only five main stats to worry about, and they're mostly self-explanatory on a surface level. There are some deeper intricacies that aren't obvious at first glance, however. It's not uncommon for new players to ignore important stats to focus solely on things like Speed. A healthy stat balance is the best strategy in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, so here's what you need to know about Speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit.

All Umamusume Stats, Explained

There are five key stats that every Trainee can develop in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit all affect your Trainee's racing abilities in different ways, and some characters are better suited to specific stats and racing strategies.

Speed

Umamusume Speed Stat

Speed is the most obvious stat in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, and it's easily the most important of the five. It dictates how fast a character runs, which is understandably important for a racing game. You should spend most of your time developing your Trainee's Speed stat during a Career. However, it's not the only thing that matters, and it's important to spend some time focusing on other stats as well.

Stamina

Umamusume Stamina Stat

Stamina is the second most important stat in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, as it affects how long a character can maintain their peak running speed. If your Trainee has low Stamina, they'll slow down to a crawl in the final stretch of a race, making it difficult to win races even if their Speed stat is high. The last leg of a race is one of the most crucial moments in Umamusume, so you should make sure your characters have sufficient Stamina to keep going. Otherwise, everyone else will outpace them during the last spurt.

Power

Umamusume Power Stat Updated

Power isn't as straightforward as Speed or Stamina, but it's still an incredibly important stat for most characters. The higher a character's Power stat, the faster they'll accelerate toward their maximum running speed. It also affects your Trainee's ability to break out of the pack mid-race and cement themselves as a front-runner. If your runner doesn't have enough Power compared to her opponents, she won't get up to top speed quickly enough, and she'll get lost in the crowd and end up with a middling placement when the race is over.

Certain track conditions give the Power stat a chance to shine as well. For example, running on dirt tracks instead of turf requires more Power. It's not entirely without flaws, however, since runners with higher Power stats will eat into their Stamina reserves much faster than other racers, making it harder to stay at top speed once they get there.

Guts

Umamusume Guts Stat Losing Race

Guts is one of the most complicated Umamusume stats, and it's not generally worth as much attention as the other four. Essentially, Guts helps your Trainee win those photo-finish races more often. It's sort of like a secondary Stamina meter, giving your racer a final burst of energy when they're neck-and-neck with another runner.

It's much more important for longer races than short sprints, but it has a place in most builds once the other stats have been sufficiently upgraded. It's hard to tell exactly how Guts is affecting your Trainee at any given moment, but when they catch a second wind and blow past the competition, you'll be glad you set aside some training time for it.

Wit

Umamusume Wit Stat

Wit is another complicated stat in Umamusume, and it affects a little bit of everything. Wit mainly increases your Trainee's skill activation rate, letting them put their newly-acquired abilities to the test whenever the right circumstances arise. It also prevents your runner from making mistakes like late starts, so you shouldn't ignore Wit when planning out your training regimen.

Wit also affects a character's Stamina consumption. With a low Wit stat, your racer will have a hard time maintaining their pace and will end up wasting Stamina as a result. If the other stats teach your Trainee the basics of racing, then Wit teaches them how to actually put those other stat boosts to use. You can raise your other stats as high as you want, but without sufficient Wit, your Trainee will make mistakes that set them back and cost them otherwise easy victories.
