Tom Holland is swinging into theatres this weekend, but what has him trending on social media today is a newly revealed poster for the much-awaited film Uncharted. In full Nathan Drake avatar, Holland is seen at a shipwreck that is reminiscent of the Uncharted games. Drake’s trusted buddy, Mark Wahlberg’s Victor Sullivan, a.k.a. Sully, walks with him.
The Uncharted poster was shared on Twitter by Fandango and retweeted by Sony Pictures. It reiterates the film’s release date of February 18, 2022, which was already confirmed in the first Uncharted trailer, and also informs fans of the film’s IMAX release.
It is already expected that Drake and Sully will be travelling through some treacherous lands in the live-action Uncharted film, and the poster only further confirms it. The characters are seen on what appears to be a rocky shoreline, and the looming shipwreck in the background acts as a warning sign of oncoming danger. There aren’t any big reveals in the poster, though, and fans don’t get to see anything that they haven’t already seen before. Many fans on social media did complain about the lighting in the poster, with many upset over a bad editing job. Additionally, Sully’s mustache is still missing in action, which fans of the Uncharted games are not too thrilled about.
The Uncharted games franchise is one of the most popular ones to have been released so far on the PlayStation console. As of December 2017, the Naughty Dog series had sold more than 41 million units. This figure was accumulated within a decade of the first game’s release, with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune arriving on the PlayStation 3 in November 2007. The last game in the franchise, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, has been the most popular in the series and in three years of its release, it had sold 15 million copies.
The games have a large loyal fanbase and Holland’s upcoming Uncharted movie has to live up to their expectations. Granted the movie will be seen by the mass audiences, but any time a game-adaptation is released, it is only natural to compare it with its counterpart. There have been very few live-action films based on game franchises that have truly made a mark in Hollywood. It remains to be seen if Uncharted will beat the competition.
Uncharted is scheduled to premiere in theatres on February 18, 2022.
