Doom is back in a big way. The remake back in 2016 was a monster success, and the sequel this year kept the new series rolling. There are already tons of fun mods for both games, and retroactive ones for previous titles. One of the standouts is a Spaceballs mod for Doom 2 that is as funny and strange as it sounds.
Fans of the series have been altering and modding Doom for years. Long before the remake and Doom Eternal brought the series back into the mainstream, there was a thriving community built around the games. Of course, back then there was nothing like Doom, so it made sense that many variations would spring up.
Add to all this that Doom Eternal is a great game for players new to FPS games, and its no wonder the Doom series is in its renaissance. Also coming back is the trend of creating games very similar to the Doom franchise and its quirks, but with different spins. One of these is Undaunted: The Heretic One, a game slated to release for iOS operating systems. With a very Doom and Hexen inspired aesthetic, it follows a banished heretic in Ancient Greece with procedurally generated dungeons.
There is no release date yet, but Undaunted will likely soon take its place as one of many Doom-like games coming to various platforms. Other titles include Metal: Hellsinger, which takes the Doom formula and adds rhythm elements. It seems the once-common practice of making Doom clones is coming back, and that's probably a good thing. After all, more experimentation leads to more shapes an FPS game can take.
Undaunted: The Heretic One will launch for iOS platforms, although there is no release date announced yet.
