Developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus, Unicorn Overlord combines classic tactical RPG mechanics with overworld exploration that will give players an immersive fantasy experience. It's also made in Vanillaware's signature style, which fans would recognize from its hit side-scrolling game 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and more.

Unicorn Overlord took 10 years to be developed because Vanillaware wanted to craft something unique within the genre. With the game finally coming out in March, players will be able to see the different countries and races that make up Unicorn Overlord's whimsical world.

Unicorn Overlord is to Tactical RPGs What Sea of Stars is to Classic JRPGs

Atlus and Vanillaware's Unicorn Overlord looks to provide the same kind of genre 'comfort food' that Sabotage's Sea of Stars delivered.

The Five Nations of Unicorn Overlord's War-Torn Continent

Unicorn Overlord is set on the fictional continent of Fevrith, which is divided into five nations: Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion. The story centers on exiled prince Alain, who travels across the continent to build an army to reclaim his throne from General Valmore of the Zenoiran Empire. Each nation has different landscapes and military forces that are fighting various wars within Fevrith. These locations will define Alain's journey in Unicorn Overlord through quests, challenges, and character interactions.

Cornia

Located in the center of Fevrith, known for its massive fertile lands and powerful military.

Drakenhold

A mountainous region with rich mineral resources, and a military led by dragon knights.

Elheim

A nation with verdant forests inhabited by light and dark elves, and headed by a divine seer.

Bastorias

A vast cold region inhabited by various beast-folk known as "bestrals."

Albion

A religious state inhabited by winged Angels, which command a strong faith-based national and military power.

Unicorn Overlord's Diverse Cast Makes For Interesting Recruits

As players explore Fevrith, they can meet and recruit over 60 characters and classes into Alain's army. Similar to the Fire Emblem franchise, each character has different skills, ranging from physical attacks to magic powers, that would prove useful in various combat situations.

The potential allies can be found in the five nations of Fevrith, meaning that they're of varying races as well. Unicorn Overlord's races also have unique class types, which can add a lot of diversity to Alain's team.

  • Humans: This is the dominant race in Unicorn Overlord. Many humans reside in Cornia, which is one of the biggest nations in Fevrith. Alain and his main party members, like priestess Scarlett and swordsman Lex, fall under this category.
  • Elven: Both light and dark elves reside in the magical forests of Elheim. Many of them use magic, but there are also elves like Ithilion who are skilled in physical combat.
  • Bestral: The beast-folk of Bastarios are humanoid species with animal-like traits. They are known for possessing frightening martial prowess that can take down opponents.
  • Angel: The heavenly beings of Albion wield various weapons, from bows and arrows to staves, to fend off enemies. Angels also use magic and their ability to fly to get an advantage on the battlefield.

Some Unicorn Overlord class types aren't exclusive to one race, as they are mostly defined by characters' specific combat abilities.

Unicorn Overlord's expansive world gives players a lot of room to experiment with team comps and character builds. This is a great sign as it might mean that the game has replay value no matter the difficulty. Plus, Unicorn Overlord's multiplatform release, which is unusual for a Vanillaware title, makes it easier for people to have access to it and participate in online games with friends.

Unicorn Overlord releases March 8, 2024 for PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
