Of all the exciting video game adaptations hitting screens in 2025, the Until Dawn movie is one of the most intriguing. The film will be an adaptation of an unconventional narrative as the game uses choice-based gameplay; therefore, fans have been eager to see how it will handle this in a movie edition.

Until Dawn was released by Supermassive Games in 2015. The story follows a group of young adults who are hunted by an ominous supernatural creature while staying on Blackwood Mountain. The characters can live or die depending on a player’s choice. The original Until Dawn featured an all-star cast including Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, Brett Dalton, and Peter Stormare. Sony announced a film adaptation of the game would be directed by David F. Sandberg early in 2024, with filming completed by the end of last year.

What to Expect From Video Game Adaptations in 2025

2024 has been a big year for video game movies and series and 2025 is shaping up to be even bigger.

Until Dawn Movie Story Details Revealed

Plot details about Until Dawn still remain thin despite its upcoming release date but Sony’s presentation at CES 2025 has shed some light on the video game adaptation. It appears that Until Dawn will not be a direct adaptation of the game and will instead focus on a new story with a new set of characters. According to Screen Gems' president Ashley Brucks (via IGN) the film adaptation will honor the source material, saying “The key to successful adapting these games comes down to one thing: respecting the source material. Our close collaboration with PlayStation Productions gives us and our filmmakers the advantage of working directly with the creators of the game.” Bruck added that the adaptation takes the essence of the game and its concept rather than adhering to the exact plot.

“In adapting Until Dawn, filmmaker David F. Sandberg, who is a big fan of the widely acclaimed game, took the essence of what makes the game great and selected elements we think are the most important to the fans and paid homage to it in the right way. We then built out Until Dawn's universe, using the core premise of a group of friends who encounter a variety of terrifying threats to tell a new story that is truly visceral and horrifying."

Until Dawn Has One Returning Cast Member From The Game

It appears from these comments that Until Dawn plans to dodge the difficulties of the original game’s branching narrative by re-writing its own, but will no doubt keep many of the hallmarks of the source material in the way it presents scares and kills. The new cast of the film includes Ella Rubin, Maia Mitchell, and Michael Cimino, to name a few. Peter Stormare, who played Dr. Hill in the game, is appearing in the film adaptation, but it remains unclear whether he will play the same character. Until Dawn recently landed an April 2025 release date, so fans won’t have to wait long to find out how successfully it brings the popular horror game to life.

Until Dawn will be released on April 25.
