Summary

  • Actor Peter Stormare's reposting of sequel theory hints at a possible Until Dawn sequel in the works.
  • The Until Dawn remake received mixed reviews.

One Until Dawn actor's reposting of a theory discussing the possibility of a sequel could be lending credence to the possibility of a second game on the horizon. Until Dawn actor Peter Stormare, who is also known for his roles in films like Fargo and Constantine, hasn't directly said anything about a sequel, but his sharing of the theory has some fans believing it's got some weight.

The original Until Dawn was released in 2015 and kicked off developer Supermassive Games' trademark style of narrative, choices-matter, anyone-can-die horror games. An Until Dawn Remake was released on October 4, this time developed by Ballistic Moon, adding extra endings and modernizing the visual content. In both games, Stormare plays Dr. Hill, a fourth wall-breaking psychiatrist who addresses players directly between chapters to check in on their feelings about how the horror story is unfolding.

Ballistic Moon's remake of Until Dawn offers a few more "good" endings as consolation for the night of horrific terror the characters endure.

On October 11, Instagram fan page Until Dawn News shared a series of images speculating about the possibility of an Until Dawn sequel, citing previously released information that Sony-owned development studio Firesprite is working on a new game from a pre-established intellectual property. Wccftech reportedly caught Stormare reposting the images on his own Instagram profile, though they no longer appear there. Stormare is set to reprise his role in the upcoming Until Dawn movie adaptation, and with his character's safe state as the games' narrator of sorts, it would make sense for him to return in a possible sequel as well.

Until Dawn Sequel Theory Shared By Actor Peter Stormare

The release of the remake begs the question of whether the market is ripe for an Until Dawn sequel. The remake has received only mixed to average reviews from fans and critics. Many of the low-scored reviews seem to be centered around the price of the Until Dawn remake, which is listed at $59.99 despite recycling much of the same content from its 2015 release, so an entirely new story may be met with a much warmer reaction.

This isn't the first time that a second Until Dawn game rumor has popped up, although the first instance dates back to the original developer. In an Ask Me Anything Reddit thread from 2015, Supermassive Games' Will Byles and Tom Heaton shot down rumors of an on-rails virtual reality shooter DLC titled Rush of Blood for the original game while also teasing an Until Dawn sequel. In reality, Rush of Blood was released by Supermassive Games about a year later, while the developers' apparent hinting at a sequel turned out to be the birth of The Dark Pictures anthology, a series of games in the style of Until Dawn but all following completely separate storylines.
