Who does not love a good RPG? And, who does not love a good freebie? So, in theory, free role-playing games should be like the holy grail of releases. Yet, not all that many titles are held in extremely high regard, and "free-to-play" is almost considered a bad phrase. Sure, Genshin Impact has proven that this price point can be implemented while still providing a satisfying package for everyone involved, but projects like that are exceptions.

Still, it is kind of exciting to check out a new free game, especially in recent years, as the market has become rather flooded. While the future holds plenty of exciting upcoming RPGs, the following games are all confirmed to be free-to-play. Hopefully, they will end up being great additions to the gaming landscape and the daily routines of thousands of players.

I left out Path of Exile 2, since it is already out in paid early access. Still, the full launch will be free-to-play.

Blade & Soul has been around in some form since the early 2010s, and the original game is relatively well-established as an action MMORPG. Blade & Soul Heroes takes place before the original RPG and centers around collecting characters to put together a 5-member party. The game features both real-time combat and turn-based strategy, with the former occurring during open-world exploration and the latter being seemingly associated with the competitive mode. Pre-registration is currently open, too, ahead of the project's September 2, 2025, Global Launch.

New free games are coming soon, and here are the biggest upcoming titles you should keep an eye on.

With more than 40 heroes to collect, Blade & Soul Heroes seems set to include gacha mechanics, especially since the combat and progression revolve around evolving your party with new characters. Naturally, the heroes are divided into different classes, and putting together a party with high synergy will likely be crucial. That said, the game should have a conventional story as well, one that revolves around a young girl who is trying to rebuild her clan after it was destroyed.

Suikoden Star Leap announced

If you grew up on PS1 (or even PS2) JRPGs, you probably have some fond memories of Konami's Suikoden. A few spin-offs aside, the series mostly disappeared after 2006's fifth main entry, but the publisher seems to be trying to revive it in recent years. We recently saw the debut of the Suikoden I & II remaster, which was pretty great. There is even an anime on the way. Finally, Suikoden Star Leap is on the horizon, and there is more than enough reason to be cautiously optimistic about this project's potential.

Yes, a free-to-play game is maybe not what every die-hard fan wanted to see, but Suikoden's massive recruitable playable characters system does seem like a perfect fit for modern gacha culture. However, the upcoming RPG looks primed and ready to commit to Suikoden's legacy. Star Leap contains 108 party members who will be collectible by playing the main story (at least, going by available information). Gacha mechanics might be included for stuff like events, though. Beyond that, Star Leap is being sold as a throwback to old-school JRPGs, including gorgeous pixel graphics, a story-driven campaign, and turn-based strategic combat.

Arknights is a massive franchise, particularly in Asia (but also in Western nations). The mobile game has been going strong for years by this point, and that will not be changing anytime soon; however, Hypergryph has been working on a new project that, if done right, could push Arknights to even higher heights. Endfield has been in development for quite a while, and while information has been fairly hard to come by at times, a beta was completed earlier in 2025. At this point, most people just seem to be waiting for a release date to be announced, hopefully marking the proper start of a new era of RPG dominance for the IP.

Set on a planet called Talos-II, Arknights: Endfield will challenge players to explore a world that has become corrupted by the Blight and Ankhors. The gameplay combines real-time action with strategic elements, along with offering a degree of exploration courtesy of a semi-open world. Base building will also be part of the equation. Resource management is also central, as the player's role would be to essentially create a factory to mine items.

Open World RPG Where Winds Meet is Already a Big Hit Thumbnail

Where Winds Meet almost seems too good to be true. This upcoming 2025 free RPG offers a stunning open-world based on historical China, a deep Wuxia-based combat system with various weapon types, top-notch visuals, realistic NPCs, player-driven choices, side quests, and microtransactions that seem set to be solely cosmetic. Also, 4-player co-op will be included. Like, that is a lot to deliver for a full-priced game, let alone a free-to-play title. Still, almost all the press around Where Winds Meet has been really positive, with previews generally going down well and encouraging cautious excitement.

Stills from Total War: Three Kingdoms, and Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, and Jade Empire.
7 Best Games Set In China

The following critically acclaimed games are ideal choices for those wanting to play a game set in China.

1

Set during China's Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, which occurred during the 10th century, Where Winds Meet should let you forge your path to an extent, and that includes creating your character. Wuxia serves as the basis for both combat and traversal, allowing you to master martial arts, a variety of weapons, and leap across rooftops. You will have relaxing mini-games and intense boss battles, along with moving stories that are tied to NPCs rather than the overarching narrative.

Where Winds Meet is already available in China, but the Western version is expected for 2025.

The Seven Deadly Sins Origin Press Image 1

A bit of a surprising announcement, but The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is on the way, with Netmarble handling the project. The manga/anime is a fairly well-known property, but it has never had much of a presence in the gaming world. A free open-world RPG is a pretty big leap from a forgettable 3D fighter, although it is certainly way more exciting than the latter. This game is probably just for fans of the source material who are just dying to explore Britannia and interact with the eponymous heroes, but it is also set in a different timeline. Therefore, newcomers should be able to follow the story without too much trouble. You step into the shoes of a new character, too.

If nothing else, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin seems to have done a great job of replicating the manga's vibrant and whimsical world. Britannia looks ridiculous in Unreal Engine 5, and it might honestly look better than the anime. The combat has not been shown off in too much detail yet, but it does seem to be real-time. Players will unlock different characters, and they might be able to swap between them in battle.
