Hogwarts Legacy was the first original Harry Potter video game idea outside of Quidditch sports games. It was not the first Harry Potter game to be an RPG though, as the Game Boy Color version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and the Game Boy Advance version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban were turn-based RPGs.

Upcoming RPGs That Could Be The New Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Can these upcoming games usurp Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's rule over the 2025 RPG scene, and maybe even challenge it for Game of the Year?

Hogwarts Legacy was a very successful game, and Warner Bros. Will assuredly greenlight a sequel game in the future. While fans are waiting, they may want to keep an eye out for some upcoming games similar to Hogwarts Legacy featuring everything from open-worlds to school settings to magically gifted protagonists. They may not be exact matches, but they should still be looked into.

Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road is not a school-life game based around witches and wizards, but it does feature magical abilities. Before Quidditch, Europeans enjoyed a good game of soccer, so that’s one reason fans of Hogwarts Legacy may enjoy it.

Also, the school aspect seems interesting, as players can befriend others to join their team. During matches, games will play out in real time, but pause monetarily as players make decisions about which skills to use. It looks like one of the more bombastic entries in Level-5’s long-running series to date.

Demonschool looks like it's very much inspired by Persona, due to its school setting, and Final Fantasy Tactics, since battles play out in a grid-based format. Players can explore their school and the surrounding grounds with a simplistic menu and enjoy deep conversations with party members and NPCs.

These Games Aren’t Coming Soon, But They Are Worth Hyping Up

Hype trains are dangerous, as they can get derailed, but these games look so promising that getting hyped for their far-off release is still worth it.

The tactical combat arenas are small, meaning battles shouldn’t last as long as most entries in the tactical RPG genre. It seems like a perfect game to get on the Switch or Steam Deck, and Hogwarts Legacy fans can appreciate the occult angle, the school setting, and the demonic abilities.

Kingdom Of Night

The 80s Are Calling

  • Developer: Friends of Safety
  • Publishers: DANGEN Entertainment, Game Source Entertainment
  • Planned Release Date: Q4 2025
  • Planned Systems: PC

Kingdom of Night is another game about teens attending a school when things go awry one night. Set in the 80s, players can choose one of several RPG classes for their teen hero at the start. The two magical classes Hogwarts Legacy fans may appreciate are the Necromancer and Sorcerer.

Players can learn skills and spells as they progress, and even create different combos with their runes. It may look like a simplistic top-down action RPG, but the class system and 80s school setting seem unique enough to make it worth wishlisting for now.

Witchbrook looks like a perfect game for what most Hogwarts Legacy fans are craving, at least if they want to attend a school for witchcraft and wizardry. In this bite-sized world, players will be able to explore the city and school grounds through various methods, from broomsticks to vespas.

Players can attend classes to learn spells and form social bonds with friends. Witchbrook will also be come with a four-player co-op option for anyone looking to take their witchy feelings online with friends. It’s not known how deep the game's spell casting will get, or if there will be intense combat, but even if it is just a life sim, Witchbrook looks like an adorable game akin to Stardew Valley, but with magic.

Wizard Cats

Hundreds Of Spells To Master

  • Developer: BigFrogg Studios
  • Publisher: BigFrogg Studios
  • Planned Release Date: TBA
  • Planned Systems: PC

Wizard Cats is the perfect roguelike for players looking for something cute and friendly while also offering a lot of combat choices. Learning new spells in Hogwarts Legacy was half the fun, and Wizard Cats is boasting a near infinite amount of learnable spells to craft during runs. That’s a bold proclamation, but if true, that will make each attempt more exciting.

It’s a top-down game with a colorful aesthetic that almost looks like a tactical RPG, but players can freely roam dungeons in search of treasure and enemies. When all is said and done, who doesn’t love playing a good, well-fed cat in a video game?

Persona 4 was released on the PS2 in 2008, and while it did receive several ports, Persona 4 Revival is a bigger deal than those. It’s a full remake on the scale of Persona 3 Reload, and while not much has been shown yet, it;'s sure to be a must-play given the pedigree of the original game.

Young Grace in Resident Evil Requiem
Upcoming Horror Games With Chilling Monsters

Halloween is fast approaching, and these upcoming horror games will be perfect to play around the holiday.

Fans of the original know what to expect, as the story revolves around Japanese teens trying to solve a series of murders in their small town. To do so, they can travel into a TV dimension to befriend and fight demons. Attend class by day, fight monsters at night; it’s a satisfying gameplay loop that’s may not be as open as Hogwarts Legacy, but Persona 4 is a classic all the same and a standout entry in the Persona series.

Project Bloomwalker

A Studio Ghibli Challenger

  • Developer: Netmarble Neo
  • Publisher: Netmarble
  • Planned Release Date: TBA
  • Planned Systems: PC and Xbox

Project Bloomwalker looks like it could be a long ways off, as seeing “Project” in a title is rarely an indicator of an impending release. That said, it’s one to keep an eye on even though there is no official Steam or Xbox page for it yet. It looks heavily inspired by Studio Ghibli’s are style, and specifically, the studio's classic film, Howl’s Moving Castle.

Players travel around with their walking alchemy lab and set up shop in new locales, presumably all around the world. It’s not known how much alchemy or wizardry will be involved and if it will be more of a life sim or a magical combat game, but so far, Project Bloomwalker does have a wondrous look to it that any Hogwarts Legacy or Studio Ghibli fan is sure to adore.
