All that and more in this week’s roundup of games industry news.
The Best War Games Recap for 04/29/24 – 05/05/24
The newest Batman: Arkham game is announced, Helldivers 2 is suddenly a contentious IP, and more in this week's The Best War Games recap.
Microsoft Shuts Down Bethesda’s Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin
The Evil Within and Hi-Fi Rush’s Tango Gameworks and Prey and Redfall’s Arkane Austin have been shuttered by Microsoft. These Bethesda cuts also include Alpha Dog and Roundhouse.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Deemed ‘Disappointing’
Rocksteady’s live-service multiplayer endeavor was always mired in controversy and criticism. Now, without much surprise given its reception and dwindling playerbase, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been labeled a major financial flop for Warner Bros. Discovery.
MultiVersus Reveals Joker as a Playable Character
Fortunately for fans of Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham games, Mark Hamill’s clearly not finished playing the Joker yet. MultiVersus has revealed Hamill’s Joker will be joining Kevin Conroy’s Batman in the cartoony WB-licensed platform-fighter with a gameplay trailer dropping tomorrow.
Nintendo Teases the Switch Successor Reveal and Release
Nintendo still has cold feet about announcing its next console platform, but the Switch 2 will reportedly be revealed before the end of next March as Nintendo’s fiscal year concludes. Its release window is now expected around that time, too, planting it right before summer 2025 if so.
Animal Well Soars on Steam Top-Selling Games Charts
Made popular by the fact that it’s published by YouTuber Dunkey’s indie label Bigmode, Shared Memory’s Animal Well has been receiving extraordinarily high reviews on Steam. The Metroidvania was released on May 9 and while it’s largely being spoken about in connection to Dunkey due to the obvious attention his name draws, it’s for Animal Well’s benefit since more eyes will inevitably be on it as a result.
Features
The Boys’ Homelander is a hotly anticipated Kombat Pack DLC addition to Mortal Kombat 1. However, while his Compound V-fueled abilities are enough to make him a powerfully violent character searing laser beams through opponents’ heads, it’s his absurd and psychotic tendencies that will truly distinguish him apart from the game's roster.
Movies & TV
Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation has had time to marinate after releasing all episodes a month ago. With several characters whose points of view are invested in throughout the seasons, each episode has its own nugget of comedy gold or devastating world-building to indulge in.
Guides
Hades 2 had been out in the wild for a tiny bit as part of a closed technical test. But now, apropos of nothing, Hades 2 has launched in early access and apparently contains more content in this state than the whole of the original Hades when it was fully released.
The Best War Games Exclusives
There isn’t a shortage of retro-inspired survival horror games out in the wild. Thankfully, Crow Country nails what made those PS1-era games classics in the first place.
