  • A Reddit user rescued a large collection of games and consoles from being thrown out by a garbage truck.
  • The haul includes unopened games, a PC, a GTX 1050 GPU, and other functional items.
  • Efforts to save physical games have intensified as the digital market grows, supported by petitions like Stop Killing Games.

A Reddit user claims they were able to save a sizable video game collection from being turned into scrap. The haul includes what appears to be a pristine copy of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, a Sony PlayStation 2, and even a decent gaming PC, among other things. Efforts to preserve physical games have intensified in recent years as the world continues to shift toward digital products and services.

It is not uncommon for people to accumulate piles of merchandise after being immersed in their hobbies for a while. Some do part ways with their goods, like the person who said goodbye to their impressive collection of 140 games and 14 consoles that was slowly amassed over the course of two decades. Fortunately, the items from that pile were sold off, so those games and consoles likely just switched owners and joined new collections. This is not always the case, however, and sometimes people like Reddit user cheater00 have to brave bad weather in order to make sure that someone's pre-loved piece of merchandise never reaches the junkyard.

A Pokemon fan shows off their complete collection of mainline games from across every generation, getting massive attention online.

In a recent post on the gaming subreddit, cheater00 recounted how they rescued a large collection of games and consoles from being taken away by a garbage truck at around 5 AM one day. They allegedly ran up to the pile right as it was being thrown into the compactor, all while it was raining. Cheater00's recovered treasure, which had apparently been cleaned out from someone's basement, featured a PS2 Slim, a Game Boy Color, and a gaming PC with a GTX 1050. While a bit dated, the GPU actually meets the minimum system requirements for Manor Lords, a modern title that recently made the jump to Unreal Engine 5.

Cheater00's haul also included a bunch of games for the 3DS, PS2, and Xbox 360. One of the games, seemingly a copy of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, widely regarded as one of the best games in the entire Assassin's Creed series, was unopened and still in its wrapper. There were three working LCD monitors, a 50-inch TV that fails to turn on, and various car-related items as well, according to Cheater00. The Reddit user said they were happy to have saved all of this stuff from being destroyed.

In their post, Cheater00 mentioned the Stop Killing Games movement, an initiative that seeks to protect games from being shut down by their owners. This goal can supposedly be achieved by requiring publishers to always keep their released games in a functional and playable state. A petition asking to implement this policy in the European Union has already managed to gather more than 361,000 signatures as of writing.
