Summary

  • Vin Diesel announced that Fast X: Part 2 is planned for release in 2027.
  • Vin Diesel hopes for the film to bring the series back to LA and focus on car culture.
  • The movie will supposedly use CGI to bring back Paul Walker's character Brian O'Conner.

It's been more than two years since Fast X came out, and there is still no concrete news about when exactly Fast X: Part 2 will release in theaters. That doesn't mean Vin Diesel can't hype up the fanbase a bit, though.

The Fast & Furious franchise has grown into one of the biggest film series on the planet despite the longest of odds. When The Fast and the Furious was released in 2001 with up-and-comers Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in the starring roles, it was a mid-budget bet that teenage boys who like cars would show up to theaters across the country. A solid bet it was, and two sequels—2 Fast 2 Furious and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift—with ballooning budgets, middling returns, and shifting casts followed. 2009's Fast & Furious saw Walker and Diesel return to the franchise after some time away, setting up 2011's Fast Five to kick things into overdrive. The fifth entry brought Dwayne Johnson into the fold and nearly doubled the box office of the previous high. It was off to the races, and the Fast & Furious series ultimately began rivaling Marvel, DC, Jurassic World, and James Bond for the honors of most popular film franchise on the planet.

Earlier this weekend, Vin Diesel took to the stage at Fuel Fest 2025 to announce some shocking news about Fast X: Part 2. He began by claiming he had just met with Universal about releasing the supposed finale in 2027. Diesel insisted he get three things from them to have it done by then: A) they bring the series back to Los Angeles, B) the series returns to the car culture that made it a hit in the first place, and C) Paul Walker's character Brian O'Conner returns to the fold despite Walker's unfortunate passing in 2013. Yes, it seems as if the Fast & Furious franchise will be resurrecting Walker via CGI yet again after doing so to finish out his scenes in Furious 7.

Do We Really Need This, Though?

The Fast & Furious franchise has already brought Walker back to screens via CGI magic before. When Walker died in a car accident in 2013, he hadn't finished his scenes on Furious 7, so the production team used his brothers Caleb and Cody as stand-ins and used face-replacement technology to finish things out. That being said, Furious 7 was already well into production, and Walker had shot numerous scenes for the film before his tragic death.

Resurrecting deceased actors via CGI has been the subject of much controversy over the past decade or so. As technology continues to advance, the practice has become more common. As more and more studios bring actors back to life, more and more people seem to have issues with it online. Also, the results can be quite a mixed bag. Wonky scenes featuring famous faces in films like The Flash, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Alien: Romulus have proven to be controversial with fans.

Regardless, Fast X: Part 2 will seemingly reunite Brian O'Conner and Dom Toretto for one last ride, no matter what people think.
