Peak was released on June 16, and its story is simple: to escape from a mysterious island, players must climb to the center of a mountain. The task itself will not be easy, as each map is procedurally generated, making each attempt a new challenge. In addition, players must climb through different biomes, treat injuries, collect food and items to survive and advance as they ascend, while using statues to revive dead companions. Peak shared a brief teaser revealing its first major update, which will be released on Monday, August 11. Named “Update Mesa,” the 20-second video shows the characters from Peak running through a desert to escape something. One of the characters returns to retrieve their doll, which is stuck in a cactus, but is forced to leave the item behind because they are almost caught up in what appears to be a sandstorm. Peak has been receiving regular updates, but this time, everything indicates that the developers plan to introduce a new biome.
The cooperative element helped Peak become a quick hit for Aggro Crab and Landfall, the developer responsible for the games Content Warning and Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. As a result, Peak reached a significant milestone just one month after its release, selling five million copies and receiving praise from fans. The milestone is also good news for the game's future, as it reinforces the developers' plans to introduce new features such as localization and updates ranging from quality-of-life improvements to new content.
Peak's success exemplifies the popularity that cooperative games have enjoyed for some time. Although currently only available via Steam and Steam Deck, Peak may be released for consoles in the future.
